Critics Consensus

The Mountain Between Us may be too far-fetched for some viewers to appreciate, but it's elevated by reliably engaging performances from Idris Elba and Kate Winslet.

Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald In the end, all depends on the appeal of Elba and Winslet and they don't disappoint. Rated: 3/5 Oct 20, 2017 Full Review Stephen Romei The Australian Winslet and Elba are easy actors to watch and the landscape shots are beautiful, but this movie is just silly. Rated: 2/5 Oct 19, 2017 Full Review Ben Sachs Chicago Reader I was surprised by the film's shift from adventure story to romantic melodrama, and yet the turn feels natural. Everyday life more often resembles a melodrama than an adventure story. Oct 19, 2017 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Winslet and Elba, of course, remain magnetic screen presences, though their dull character descriptions prevent anything beyond passing emotional investment. Rated: 2/4 Mar 17, 2022 Full Review Lauren Bradshaw Fangirl Freakout The Mountain Between Us is an enthralling story from start to finish, one even more captivating to watch thanks to the captivating cinematography and excellent performances from Winslet and Elba. Rated: B Nov 21, 2021 Full Review Hosea Rupprecht Pauline Media Studies Sometimes the movie manages to drag a little as limping Alex slogs along behind Ben but that gives the audience time to admire the breathtaking scenery of the film... Monica W My hubby and I read the book and were so disappointed in the movie. It was nothing like the incredible and deeply emotional narrative of the book. It lost a ton of the dialog, as well as the humor that the book had. Plus, it didn’t grasp the true challenges they faced. Quite disappointed Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/02/24 Full Review Wendel L Direção: Bom Atuação: Bom Roteiro: Ok Caracterização: Bom Soundtrack: Ok Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/09/24 Full Review John Marius G As far as credibility goes, it fails terribly, but there’s nothing wrong with the actors or the acting. The chemistry is almost palpable. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/14/24 Full Review Nur Ashikin J I love this movie. It is underrated. I was immersed. I understood both their feelings at the end of the movie whilst both were walking away in different directions. The "I can't breathe moment". When people go through tramautic incidents like this - only the two of them knows how it feels to feel safe. Ben made her feel safe and Ben was drawn to want to make her feel safe, all he wanted to do was look for her and make sure she's okay. I felt that at the end of it. Noone can love you more than the person who will not give up on you (almost losing you twice or thrice) when he could have saved himself. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/11/24 Full Review Toby G The premise of this film is fine, albeit unoriginal. It had the potential to be a great love story, an edge-of-the-seat romance of two people whose love rose from the fires of tragedy. But despite the considerable run-time and the unlikely context, the characters were not relatable and their blossoming love even less so. As for the ending, I laughed. A real shame as I generally like both actors. I think it was more the writing, and perhaps directing, which let it down. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/31/24 Full Review Dani G Survival romance drama starring two performers with great, strong personalities that had a good chemistry.
