Synopsis
Paul (Andrej Jautze), a doting grandson, looks back on the life of his grandfather (Armin Mueller-Stahl) in pre-World War II Germany, where the veteran performer is employed as a "movie teller," a narrator of silent films who incorporates violin playing into his narration. Paul's grandfather is proud of his artistic job but becomes distressed when sound movies -- or "talkies"-- threaten his line of work. Meanwhile, storm clouds are gathering on a national level with Nazism on the rise.
