Critics Consensus

The Nun boasts strong performances, spooky atmospherics, and a couple decent set-pieces, but its sins include inconsistent logic and narrative slackness.

Bilge Ebiri Rolling Stone Once everyone gets to the abbey, the film simply gives up the ghost and cynically indulges every horror trick in the book. Rated: 2.5/5 Oct 10, 2018 Full Review Matthew Rozsa Salon.com By overly relying on jump scares, "The Nun" uses a mechanical approach toward instilling fear rather than a more profound understanding of terror. Rated: 2/4 Sep 23, 2018 Full Review Donald Clarke Irish Times Alas, The Nun is more chaotic than most of the many, many films set in The Conjuring universe. To compare it to a ghost train would be to understate the narrative cohesion that habitually governs those seaside entertainments. Rated: 2/5 Sep 18, 2018 Full Review Bryce Hanson Horror Movie Talk The Nun is a good horror movie. There isn’t anything truly exceptional about The Nun, but it executes the tropes of a haunting/demon story better than most. Like The Conjuring, it is a light, but very effective R-rated feature. Rated: 7/10 Jul 25, 2025 Full Review Calum Cooper Source (Scotland) The movie isn’t so bad that it requires an exorcism, but audiences may still feel the need to repent… assuming they can remember what they’re repenting for. Rated: 2/5 Jul 14, 2024 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies But then you get to the storytelling which slowly sucks out the film’s potential. Juan Una película muy buena Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/19/25 Full Review Justin enjoyed this movie. great story telling. loved that farmigas daughter ggot to play a younger version of her. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/21 Full Review matthias s Rewatching The Nun to prep for the new Conjuring film felt like giving it a second chance—but honestly, not much has changed. I remember not liking it when it first came out, and this rewatch pretty much confirmed why. Don’t get me wrong, it’s always a joy seeing Taissa Farmiga (she deserves more horror roles), and on paper the premise works: creepy convent, gothic atmosphere, plenty of eerie potential. The setting alone is tailor-made for a solid scare-fest. But the execution? Not so much. The scares are predictable, the story is paper-thin, and the cinematography is practically non-existent—half the movie is so dark I couldn’t even tell what was happening. It’s frustrating because the potential is all there, just buried under dull direction and cheap jump scares. Instead of spine-tingling terror, it feels like a spooky screensaver. Not the worst horror ever, but definitely a wasted opportunity. ★★½ Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/23/25 Full Review Ry N The Exorcist meets The Conjuring in this origin for Valak set in Romania during 1952. I like how this film weeded itself into the backstory, but the movie felt kind of cheesy with the blood of Jesus thing and there was so many jump scares they could've called this Peek-A-Boo. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/19/25 Full Review Audience Member Comedy movies have taken a weird direction. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/17/25 Full Review David H Loud noises and jump scares. Nothing even creepy about this movie. Only gave it one star because it was easier to watch than Annabelle: Homecoming. Cool Halloween costume came out of it though Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/10/25 Full Review Read all reviews
