What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Old Guard is occasionally restricted by genre conventions, but director Gina Prince-Bythewood brings a sophisticated vision to the superhero genre - and some knockout action sequences led by Charlize Theron.

Given a team of highly regarded actors in Charlize Theron, Chiwetel Ejiofor and KiKi Layne, Prince-Bythewood delivers both satisfying, high-octane fights and a proper storyline to stitch them together. Go to Full Review

It's a film that's rewarding to spend time with, with a substance-over-style approach that's entirely commendable, and all too rare in films of this type. Go to Full Review

[The Old Guard] is easily one of the better films of this genre in the past decade, and deserved a theatrical release. It also deserves a sequel, so do the world a solid and add to their ratings by giving it a watch. Go to Full Review

Peter F @RT28007450 2d I was able to watch this for 16 minutes. Bad, wooden acting, horribly dumb dialogue, everything feels fake here. Couldn't suspend my disbelief, or this this seriously for a single moment. Oh, and it's ridiculously predictable too. How do people like this? It's insultingly bad. See more Tan C @TanZoi Apr 4 Despite a solid premise and committed actors, the film plays out as a generic, assembly-line action movie. It gestures at themes like immortality and loneliness, but mostly delivers formulaic chases, gunfights, and a flat villain. The best part is the immortals concept. Quynh’s endless drowning and Booker’s guilt-filled life briefly show immortality as a curse, not a gift. As an action film, it fails: the combat is dull and forgettable, with only Andy’s fire axe scene standing out—nearly fatal for its genre. The core issue is tonal mismatch. A potentially thoughtful story about time and loss is buried under a formulaic plot, making it feel like two films awkwardly stitched together. Characterization is thin. Only Nile, Booker, and Merrick matter; others feel like placeholders. Andy relies on Charlize Theron’s presence, and the villain is carried mostly by Harry Melling’s performance. The music, while good alone, disrupts immersion, lacking the rhythm to support the film. See more Kay G. @KayFi Apr 3 I just have to share another amazing review for Charlize as an actress! Her performance in this movie was absolutely captivating—she brought such depth, intensity, and charisma to her role that I couldn’t look away. The movie itself was so unique and brilliantly executed, leaving me both thrilled and emotionally moved. It’s truly a cinematic experience unlike anything else I’ve seen in a while. After such an incredible sequel, I can only hope there’s a third movie in the works. I would love to see this story continue and Charlize light up the screen again! Netflix, when it wants to do something audacious, it succeeds, and this film is an example of that. See more Read all reviews
