Kelechi Ehenulo Empire Magazine Too much distance has crept in for The Old Guard 2 to feel memorable, and it shows. A convoluted, sequel-baiting mess that proves time is not a healer. Rated: 2/5 Jul 4, 2025 Full Review Robert Daniels RogerEbert.com There isn’t much of a story here. And though the sequel adds a few new faces, there aren’t many fully defined characters either. Rated: 1.5/4 Jul 4, 2025 Full Review Lindsey Bahr Associated Press Cliffhangers are a gamble -- when the movie is satisfying on its own, it can leave them wanting more. In this case, it might just leave them angry. Audiences in 2025 deserve better. Rated: 2/4 Jul 3, 2025 Full Review Connor Petrey Pop Culture Leftovers Sitting at nearly 20 minutes shorter than The Old Guard, this sequel suffers from its incomplete story - hedging its bets that Netflix will be ordering a third film. Jul 11, 2025 Full Review Maxance Vincent Awards Radar The action is dull and unengaging. The editing lacks the robustness of the first film. It all feels unnecessarily overcomplicated in its plotting and loses the sole reason why the original film felt so fresh and exciting. Rated: 1.5/4 Jul 11, 2025 Full Review Terry Staunton Radio Times Thurman makes a chilling adversary and the energy levels rise whenever she's on screen, but there are the same frustrations and shortcomings as before. Jp I Slow, plodding, Theron is no, I repeat, no action star. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/13/25 Full Review Eddy H The cliffhanger kills it for me. Another 20 mins and they could've ended the movie. Instead, it's half a story; half a plot. If they re-edit and finish it, I'll rewatch it. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/13/25 Full Review Alex H I thought it was fun, and who didn’t want to see Charlize duel Uma? The only part I hated was the extreme cliffhanger ending, on par with The Empire Strikes Back, except that no one doubted there would be a conclusion to Star Wars and that seems very doubtful with The Old Guard. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/13/25 Full Review Vhanesa A I loved the first movie so much—the action, the stunts, everything. The second part is also great, but the story ended on a cliffhanger. What's really sad is that there's still no news on whether or when there will be a Part 3. I would really love to see another sequel, because if not, this Part 2 will feel like a waste. So please let there be another sequel of this movie... Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/13/25 Full Review Cynical C The Old Guard 2 is yet another sequel that nobody cared nor asked for. Story is bad, the fight scenes are like watching puppets fight, the acting is some of the most lazy and worthless that I’ve seen in quite a long while and the dialogue only serves the purpose to just speed the plot along, which moves at the pace of a snails funeral, despite being a supposedly action-based film. My only prayer is that this franchise that nobody wants is not immortal much like it’s characters. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/13/25 Full Review Adrian S It deviates heavily from the source material, which isn't inherently a bad thing, but it adds a lot of stuff in that makes for a confusing, convoluted mess. There are plot points that don't get fully resolved or explored, added in conflict that doesn't contribute anything meaningful, and a brave (or foolish) cliff-hanger downer ending that leaves me more upset than hopeful for a sequel. Redeeming qualities: All of the actors gave great performances and the action scenes were fun to watch. Uma Thurman especially has great presence as a villain.
