Andrea Gronvall Chicago Reader This is a career-capping showcase for Redford, who with subtlety and ease goes out in style after a great long run. Emma N It should be a beautiful film, but it falls short. There's a lot I could say about how the different threads are neither delved into enough, not woven together in a way that feels right. But if I had to pick one thing that lets me down the most, it's the way Forrest Tucker is depicted. This is a man who's been to prison 30 times, escaped 18 times, abandoned his children, lied to his wives about who he was. This dude might have been charming, but he likely lacked any normal kind of conscience or ability to love. The only time this is directly spoken about is when Hunt, the detective, interviews Tucker's traumatized daughter. We really never see it in Tucker himself. Redford does a great job of being quietly magnetic, compassionate, forlorn in a very attractive way. But those qualities alone, even in a romanticized version of this criminal, just don't square with what we know about the character, a career criminal. What a lost opportunity. I like Redford too much to say it's a vanity film, but I can understand why one would. All these incredible actors doing as much as they can with what they were given. And such beautiful filming, in the lush style of gritty New Hollywood 1970s movies. How great it would have been if there were real complexity, tension, tragedy. Why did Redford, who of course had a lot of creative input on the film, stop so short? Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/21/25 Full Review The C Boring and tedious with flat and weird direction. The camera is all over the shop as is the whole tone of the film. What’s it trying to be? It ain’t funny and there’s literally no drama. Plus the music was all wrong and intrusive. I kept wishing it would stop. Very distracting. I struggled to stay awake. A dreary night in and hardly a fitting farewell for a Hollywood icon. Awful film.
