The final days of the mad, tyrannical Czar Paul I of Russia (Emil Jannings) are recounted. As the Czar behaves erratically and goes after his mistress (Vera Voronina), Count Pahlen (Lewis Stone), his friend, plots to kill the ruler and liberate the Russians. Pahlen convinces palace guard Stefan (Harry Cording) to carry out the murder. This semi-biographical story is based on three plays: "Paul I" by Dmitri Merezhkovsky, "Der Patriot" by Alfred Neumann and "The Patriot" by Ashley Dukes.

Edmund Wilson The New Republic The sets and the photography of The Patriot are rather ugly, but the acting and the direction are wonderful, and seem to prove -- what has sometimes been denied -- that the movies are able to compete with the serious spoken drama in its own field. Sep 11, 2023 Full Review Times (UK) Staff Times (UK) Mr. Emil Jannings in the part of the mad Tsar uses the precise observation of the modern actor, but only to increase the fantastic element of his part. Jul 8, 2020 Full Review Alfred Rushford Greason Variety Many elements combine to give The Patriot a valid claim to greatness, much as that word has been abused in cinemania. Jul 7, 2020 Full Review Pare Lorentz Judge When you are really logy from seeing reel after reel of tasteless movies, it is flying in the face of gratitude to find fault with a picture so superior in every way as The Patriot. Oct 30, 2023 Full Review Robert E. Sherwood LIFE It belongs definitely on the honor roll of masterpieces in celluloid. Oct 4, 2021 Full Review Edward Cushing Brooklyn Daily Eagle We recall no sequence either hackneyed, trivial or tedious. In all technical respects The Patriot is equally satisfactory. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member A great film...trailer! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member I have no words to describe this. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member what can I say, I've seen the trailer of this film. That's all I'm ever going to see. nothing else of this film really exists. too bad. It looked really good. The good thing though is that it is the only lost nominee so I won't have to do something like this again I hope.. But, I only saw 3 minutes of the film. and the 3 minutes I saw were MUCH better than the entire movie of The Broadway Melody. Man, that film sucked.
