Markus must adapt to a new life with his grandmother in a small rural village. After Emīlija, a neighbor's daughter, makes some mean remarks about his father, Markus decides to teach her a cruel lesson. This has severe negative consequences which resonate throughout the village. Markus is forced to help his uncle, and he begins to harbor hatred towards the locals. The only person he can relate to is an old person living in the nearby woods. They inspire one another and keep each other's secrets. Emīlija's mother decides to punish Markus, but a dramatic turn of events changes the boy's reputation in the eyes of the villagers.
