What to Know

Critics Consensus

Ambitious to a fault, The Place Beyond the Pines finds writer/director Derek Cianfrance reaching for -- and often grasping -- thorny themes of family, fatherhood, and fate.

Gayle Sequeira Little White Lies The film points out how tough it can be to escape from cycles of violence, how misguided attempts to speed ahead only set someone on the road to ruin, and how the compulsion to ride like the wind is inextricable from the fear that you’re getting nowhere. Jul 29, 2023 Full Review Deborah Ross The Spectator Its themes are familiar - guilt; redemption; manliness; those fraternal sins - but Cianfrance's artistry and the actors' riveting performances hook you in, and may even bring depth. Sep 4, 2018 Full Review Jason Bailey Flavorwire Its narrative riskiness and emotional avidity don't always make for the smoothest viewing experience. But Cianfrance seems less interested in a tidy chronicle than in exploring some threads, in creating a feeling and seeing where it goes. Jun 21, 2016 Full Review Christopher Lloyd The Film Yap An uneven, evocative drama that generated strong opinions a decade ago but then disappeared from the public consciousness is deserving of another look. Rated: 4/5 May 15, 2023 Full Review James Croot The Post NZ Despite Ryan Gosling's prominence on the poster and other associated promotional materials, this lo-fi twisting, turning drama actually features more of another Hollywood heart-throb – Bradley Cooper. Rated: 4/5 Mar 9, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Cianfrance never allows his viewers to escape the heartbreak of his film, consuming us with a resounding feeling of sorrow over these characters and the way their lives set paths for one another. Mate P The Place Beyond the Pines was just not enjoyable for me at all, even though I recognize its treats. The whole setup is just trying to be too artistic. The movie didn't get me attached to the characters, I need to see more good days to be sad about the bad ones. I couldn't root for any of the main characters since in some way they were all bad people. There's a twist in the middle that did not work for me even though I understand why it's there. The ending is just weird. The direction is also trying to be too artistic. The cinematography too, but the character-driven camera movements are what completely worked for me. I didn't like the editing. I think this film should be a lot shorter. The performances are good though. Ryan Gosling is an all time great actor, while Bradley Cooper and Eva Mendes are really good. The Place Beyond the Pines has fundamental elements that I think ruin the movie, but I also understand why everything is the way it is. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/04/25 Full Review Nashville I. Hauntingly beautiful music will rock you. A movie of generational curses, fathers, and desperation to get things right. This is a relatable, but heartpounding film that will grip you. Everyone in screen somehow manages to magnetize and pull you in body and soul. Though not exactly a feel good film, you will feel something awestriking that you wont recognize. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/06/25 Full Review AD 3 Alot of it was too phony for me. The acting was good just sort of stuck to the material though and its like it tried to hit deep but the phoniness weighs it down making it predictable and somewhat played out. Trying to hit deep and missing makes it something I wouldn't ever want to watch again Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/12/25 Full Review Audience Member Riveting story that fully closes the circle of resolution. Excellent work by Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper. This movie has everything: Cops, Crime, Action, A love story, Politics, and Redemption. A little slow in the middle segment of a three part linear story, but its necessary for the buildup in the final part. Its a must see. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/02/25 Full Review Audience Member Marvelous 50 minutes movie ! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/25/25 Full Review Audience Member The movie was great till Gosling died, after him the story got boring and very long...
