Critics Consensus

Joey King is a credible action star and Princess, but she deserves a better kingdom than this uneven vehicle that gets weighed down by a clunky script and shabby production values.

Mick LaSalle San Francisco Chronicle King is a blast, with the fierce intensity of French actress Sara Forestier, whom she strongly resembles. And this movie is worthy of King’s exertions. Rated: 3/4 Jul 18, 2022 Full Review Brent Simon AV Club A yawningly simplistic and roundly inconsequential action movie, The Princess lacks, on a narrative level, the certitude and clarity of purpose of its title character. Rated: D Jul 1, 2022 Full Review Amy Nicholson New York Times Doesn’t hark back to ye olde European fairy tales but rather to the feminist revenge thrillers of the 1970s: works of exploitation and wuxia cinema where warrior women stuck it to the man. With knives. Rated: B- Jul 1, 2022 Full Review Rubén Rosario MiamiArtZine Kiet has crafted a violent yet strangely wholesome anomaly: a mindless but enjoyably junky East-meets-West hodgepodge that stokes our bloodlust while staying true to its storybook setting. Oct 2, 2023 Full Review Pramit Chatterjee Digital Mafia Talkies The Princess is a tongue-in-cheek, balls-to-the-walls, action extravaganza. Rated: 4/5 Jul 20, 2023 Full Review Daisy Leigh-Phippard Screen Queens It’s a story somewhat at the mercy of its budget, but one that celebrates sisterhood, ambition and centuries of fairy tales about women finding a way to escape their perils. Michael M It’s a fun, entertaining movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/02/24 Full Review Lanfranco C It is a fantasy too fantastic Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/27/24 Full Review Brian M I loved this movie, it had a great story, sweet acting and as one of my friends would put it.... "how did you get your character in the movie?" That is in reference to the type of character I like to play in D&D. I would not mind a sequel to this one, it was very well written Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/24/24 Full Review Darren B I really like the movie. The Princess as the kick-butt action hero is awesome. Normally I am bored with the medieval-fantasy trope, but having the princess doing the unexpected thing, and to save herself is really good. The little sister is a good actress too, and I'm sure she could become a bigger star one day, same for the young version of the Princess. And, normally I am not a fan of this kind of action movie, never been a fan of the Die Hard franchise, but this movie, Violent Night and Damsel are all awesome examples of this type of genre. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/03/24 Full Review Phillip A Fun movie, really didnt know what to expect when I picked it as I had not heard of it but the action was excellent and unexpected, the story wasn't great but it was a lot of fun to watch.
