What to Know

Critics Consensus

A pared-down, no-holds-barred actioner that further cements Jon Bernthal as the definitive interpreter of The Punisher in a self-contained, marvelous story that goes above and beyond for One Last Kill.

A brutally unhinged peak-TV special, The Punisher proves One Last Kill is nowhere near enough.

As is, “Punisher” is pure grindhouse fare with more grunts and groans than dialogue; it’ll make you long for something with more meat on its bones. Go to Full Review

[Bernthal] is so fully locked into this version of the Punisher, physically and emotionally, that even when the material tips into excess, he keeps it grounded. Go to Full Review

It works remarkably well because Bernthal deeply loves this character, and that's palpable every minute. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Violent, pulse-pounding, and often harrowing, the special transcends standard comic fare to dive deep into the Punisher's dark and troubled psychosis. Go to Full Review

Jess M @RT32083100 14h This character and this actor deserved far more than a mid-length feature that recycles stories and situations seen countless times before—such as in *Death Wish* (1974), *Dredd* (2012), and the *John Wick* saga (2014–2023). I thought this would explain the character's absence from the second season of *Daredevil: Born Again*, but there is no direct link to that story. I fear this is merely a formality to wrap up a relationship that was nearing its end, likely triggered by a hefty financial penalty owed to the actor for breach of contract. * The best parts: Bernthal’s solid performance and the spectacular action choreography. * The worst part: it is a hollow, dispensable pastiche that could mark an unworthy conclusion to Bernthal’s time in the MCU. See more Nick S @RT32371024 4d Just the worst. Disney You Don't Get It........Actors are top Notch, creative writing is non-existent... See more Terra S @RT62019397 5d I was really excited to catch up on this after watching Spider-Man Brand New Day. I watched the original Netflix series which was great and I LOVE Bernthal as Punisher. This was super disappointing. Its place in the timeline is very confusing. If it's during Daredevil Born Again why is Frank having this total breakdown out of nowhere. Why are the streets so violent during Fisk's crackdown? The story of the actual special is really shallow and arguably completely unneeded, with no actual resolution at the end towards the antagonist that started the violence towards him. And the bad guys were cartoonishly bad, not believable. Who would randomly throw a little dog into traffic to be killed like that. Just weird. See more Matthew A @RetroAshe02 Aug 16 The two things I love about this character are the relatability and Jon Bernthal. I watched the entire Netflix series of The Punisher so I had very high expectations with this Marvel Studios Special Presentation. We got the grit, the action, and a whole bunch of yelling. However, something just felt lacking. I feel like it could’ve been better if this would’ve been a full length film (which I believe the Punisher deserves) and the storyline could have been more developed. Overall tho, I’m very thankful Marvel has brought the Punisher into the MCU. See more Devin S @Katosepe Aug 16 Reminiscent of the cult classic Dredd, One Last Kill is more about vibes and action than lengthy dialogue. Despite this, it manages to pack one of the best pieces of character acting alongside one of the most subtle yet definitive bits of character definition that the MCU has had to date. I love Thomas Jane but Jon Bernthal IS The Punisher. Be aware though, this special is not for the faint of heart. It is brutal, it is sad, it is painful. It's depicting PTSD in all of its ugliness and it doesn't shy away from that. It also depicts a community at war with itself and doesn't shy away from that either. Make sure you're in a good place before giving this a watch. See more Chris K @Mastermind74 Aug 14 Another great story. Hope they continue making more. Hated when it ended before. Would like to see more of daredevil and punisher teaming up. See more Read all reviews
