      Critics Consensus

The Quarry's potboiler premise is largely squandered on a slow-moving plot whose meanderings thwart the efforts of a talented cast.

Paul H Actors I like with a terrible story line. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 09/07/23 Full Review Shaun K Solid movie. The acting was convincing and the plot was intriguing. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/14/23 Full Review Ashley H The Quarry is an okay film. It is about a drifter who kills a traveling preacher and takes his place at a small-town church. Shea Whigham and Michael Shannon give decent performances. The script is a little slow in places. Scott Teems did an alright job directing this movie. I liked this motion picture because of the drama and mystery. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/06/23 Full Review ken g Great acting. Slow and depressed atmosphere. But so well written and acted. Sadly not getting the recognition it deserves. I watch a lot of movies. This was very good. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member It's an interesting slow cooking crime drama with decent acting, unfortunately spoiled by an illogical odd ending. 6/10 points. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review jelisije j A movie that had a theme and a message to show their audience, but dragged out the runtime of the story that could've been in reality a 30 minute short film. Steve Pond TheWrap "The Quarry" is a slow-burn Western noir built around terrific but understated performances by Michael Shannon and Shea Whigham. Apr 28, 2020 Full Review Amy Nicholson FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) This is usually the kind of movie that I want to soak into. I like these small-town noirs and anything with Michael Shannon usually gets a thousand bonus points from me, but this film was more just OK. Apr 20, 2020 Full Review Ty Burr Boston Globe There are just two key ingredients, and they're not enough to make a meal. Rated: 2/4 Apr 20, 2020 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies With this film many of the best moments are spent watching and absorbing two wily pros like Shannon and Whigham work out a scene. Rated: 4/5 Aug 24, 2022 Full Review Grant Hermanns ComingSoon.net The Quarry's exploration of fascinating moral ambiguity is carried by stellar performances from Whigham and Shannon. Rated: 8/10 Oct 21, 2020 Full Review Graeme Tuckett Stuff.co.nz The Quarry does enough to pass as an absorbing, if slightly under-stuffed drama of the evil that men do.
