Robert E. Sherwood LIFE The Red Lily is an exceptionally worthy picture. Its story is not sensationally original, but it is firmly constructed and it makes sense; and Fred Niblo has directed every scene with great skill. Audience Member A heartbreaking movie but rife with the burden of misogyny women at the time were expected to endure...I choose to interpret the ending very differently from how it seems to have been (superficially) presented ...something more akin to "Pennies from Heaven" , with which it shares some common central themes! I think the happy-ever-after is her fantasy fullfillment as she passes away and jean ends up back to the life of a crminal. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member A beautiful heart aching drama filled with some of the most beautiful photography of underground Paris. The story of a man & woman in love who flee from their hometown & sadly get lost in Paris & spend years finding one another. Although this was a drama to the highest order it was stunningly made with some beautiful shots & some very emotional honest acting. Very glad this film was recently discovered & thankfully it has been restored to its former glory.
