Mike McCahill Guardian It's just you might reasonably want your films a little more stirring and challenging, and not quite so obviously rubber-stamped. Rated: 2/5 Jan 23, 2020 Full Review Edmund Lee South China Morning Post This mega-budget production is certainly worth the price of a ticket if nail-biting rescue missions, realistically presented, are your thing. Rated: 3.5/5 Feb 25, 2021 Full Review John Lui The Straits Times (Singapore) That bit of burlesque and the touch of gore, seen in shots of victims of explosions and crashes, are a couple of weirdly human and therefore interesting touches in an otherwise overlong and predictable production. Rated: 3/5 Jan 15, 2021 Full Review Jeanmarie Tan The New Paper (Singapore) Call it official propaganda, but at least it is executed with finesse. Rated: 3.5/5 Dec 30, 2020 Full Review Richard Yu Cinema Escapist Between action-packed rescues, acrobatic stunts, and scenes where civilians laud the bravery and heroism of China's Coast Guard, The Rescue at least makes for good propaganda, even if it's lacking in dramatic complexity. Dec 29, 2020 Full Review Daniel Eagan Film Legacy Lam's command of movement, narrative, and pacing is superb, building tremendous suspense and momentum while tightening the screws on his characters. Audience Member The scene are marvelous, but the plot is thin. While all the passengers are foreigners and no local people become unrealistic. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review harris r Melodramatics aside, this is an action packed blockbuster that will not disappoint. Dante Lam is imo one of the top five action directors in the world. In this film, he is perfection. It will blow your mind how he creates these explosive scenes as if you were right there, flinching amidst the action. That final rescue scene, visually, has to be the best I have ever seen. I feel slow-mo shots are for amateurs and so 1980's, but here they worked impeccably, and made that final rescue scene, one I will forever have etched in my mind. Simply perfection, stunning and explosive. Wow, Lam nailed it, and the entire rest of this film. Then add the insanely amazing cinematography, stunning special and visual effects, and this is better than most A-list big budget Hollywood blockbusters. Everything from the training and rescues, makes firefighter training seem like a walk in the park. Casting was excellent, and the score and soundtrack top notch. My only issue was the excessive melodramatics and the "parent and child" subplot. I didn't mind the romance part, but even with the excellent pacing, the 139 min runtime would have been more enjoyable, and less of an unnecessary emotional roller-coaster, without that subplot, and thus shaved at least 20-30 minutes, leaving us with more action than we can handle. The witty and sharp humor was good, but cheesy in this type of film, especially when it came from kids. I guess this is what happens when you have 3 writers collaborating - Wrong Size Man... errrm, darn auto-correct... I meant Wong Sze Man, Tan Yuli and Yaqing Zhi. Nevertheless, today I learned to respect the search and rescue teams, who have been trained better than Navy Seals (obviously minus the combat training), and thoroughly enjoyed this gem by Lam. It's a well deserved 9/10 from me. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Jojo Abenaavi Awesome storyline and very touching. Excellent action scenes that take you deep into the world of rescuers. Evident a lot of money was spent on this movie. My son, 13, enjoyed the film as well. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/29/20 Full Review eddie e It is tragic when an incredible movie gets into the theater and I am the only person in attendance. The Rescue, made in China for apparently more than any other Chinese movie, has the most complex big time scenes, better than, fo example the opera segment in Tenet. But with no publicity and being a foreign language film, those going this week "fill" an inferior Monster Hunter, and the Rescue is ignored. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review alberto i like it very much it reminded me of the guardian 2006 only on this movie they speak Chinese language but really cool movie Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/19/20 Full Review Christopher I Homage to real-life first responders. High intensity action. Although CGI wasn’t fluid. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/19/20 Full Review Read all reviews
