Isabel Quigly The Spectator Five men are on the track of a sixth with fifty thousand dollars on his head: with deserts, thirst, deluges, illness, vultures, shootings, lost horses, and a plot so tangled it seems hopeless trying to unravel it. Jul 20, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member This is an underrated Western. Set in the relatively modern west, I would put this film in the same category as "The Shooting" and "No Country for Old Men." A strange hybrid of spaghetti and "acid" western...somewhat unique. Plot: an indebted crop duster realizes that a friend has a bounty on his head. The crop duster colludes with the local sheriff and initially ignorant posse to collect the bounty. Misfortune ensues. A solid, understated performance from Max Von Syndow. Yvette Mimeaux is in her prime, as is Zimbalist. Entertaining and not a "cookie cutter" Western, it still holds up 50+ years later. I give it 4 1/2 stars (out of five) for being entertaining, well written, and an excellent example of Hollywood attempting successfully to retool the Western genre.
