Andrew O'Hehir Salon.com If it's patchy and derivative it also has a compelling, soapy undertow that kept me watching. May 11, 2012 Full Review V.A. Musetto New York Post [Laranas] delivers a maximum of suspense and horror, working wonders with a small budget. Rated: 3/4 May 11, 2012 Full Review Robert Abele Los Angeles Times The film's three-pronged narrative does a fair job of laying a spooky groundwork for the revelatory emotional sadism that lies behind most acts of evil; it just takes a bit of clunky exposition to get there. Rated: 3/5 May 10, 2012 Full Review C.J. Prince Way Too Indie If you can get past the shortcomings, The Road is a fun little horror movie that's best seen late at night with a group of friends. Rated: 6.7/10 Jul 3, 2019 Full Review Abbie Bernstein Assignment X As cinematographer, Laranas creates some lovely imagery, and there is enough content here to make us see unrealized possibilities, but overall, this Road is a long haul. Rated: C- Feb 2, 2019 Full Review Kofi Outlaw Screen Rant Laranas definitely has the mind and vision for good horror, but still has a bit to go before he can be called a 'master of the genre.' Audience Member As a Filipino, this was actually quite different during its release. It wasnt scary but its chilling. It has its flaws like the timeline (a 12 year old case reopened but the time interval is only ten years), poor acting and pacing in the first act, but it was a bold move for Filipino film makers. Instead of making lackluster jump scares, it focused more on developing a creepy atmosphere and it was quite effective. The premise of the story is also good but it could've been executed better. This movie deserves more attention and also a proper remake. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a fantastic horror movie. Albeit predictable, it used movie devices effectively. The buildup of the story, the suspense, mystery and depth were what sold the movie for me. They also eliminated/diminished the annoyance from the usual character tropes in horror flicks. It started out as a typical teenage scary adventure-gone-wrong and progressed into a much more layered story which eventually shifted into the protagonist's disturbing backstory. I think what can improve this movie more is to prolong the last part which is the protagonist's backstory and add more shock value to it to keep the audience engaged which can mean more violence from the sociopathic protagonist. I feel like that was the most important part. I can't fault the lack of budget much but better budget and even better portrayal of violence will mean a scarier, more believable experience. It's stretching it if the movie will go beyond 2 hours if the last part was to be extended. Maybe the solution would be to replace the very predictable, less creative scenes of the first parts in order to accommodate a more in-depth look of the backstory. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member The second or third "Best Psychological Horror" film ever made. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member This film started out slow but gradually morphed into a gripping and layered cinematic journey. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member The Road has its heart in the right place, but some lazy storytelling moments makes it an uneven experience. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member A bizarre, eerie, creepy, horror-supernatural with a dose of crime drama. A foreign film that definitely works on many levels. Admittedly the start was a bit slow but from then on the intensity grew. The Filipino actors delivered and were very convincing in their roles. My appreciation for for foreign films keeps rising!
