Mark Jenkins Washington Post The candy-colored musical from Taiwanese heartthrob Jay Chou is two-thirds delightful. Rated: 2.5/4 Jul 18, 2013 Full Review Daniel M. Gold New York Times "The Rooftop" is frenzied, funny and knowing, drenched in lavish, often surreal, imagery. Rated: 3.5/5 Jul 18, 2013 Full Review Robert Abele Los Angeles Times "The Rooftop" is a restless boy-fights-for-girl fantasia, too stylistically bulbous a misfire to allow for easy enjoyment as either a demented throwback or a genre hybrid. Rated: 2/5 Jul 18, 2013 Full Review Jeff Beck Examiner.com Chou, who also wrote and directed, has a good eye for visuals, but when it comes to his screenplay, he could have used a lot more originality. Audience Member A film so painful to sit through, it proves Jay Chou to be a one-hit wonder in this realm. There were some fun set pieces, but overall it's the perfect example of an ill-advised attempt by amateurs to break the rules of cinema. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member A romcom that reminds me of masala and Happiness of the Katakuris. There's drama, romance, musical numbers, and some fighting. It's a simple, kitch, family movie with great direction. I was just expecting more fighting, but Chou and Tsang are endearing. "The candy-colored musical from Taiwanese heartthrob Jay Chou is two-thirds delightful." - Mark Jenkins, Washington Post Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member A subpar story with subpar acting and subpar cinematography and directing but is filled with memorable setting. Going into the movie I thought it was going to be a musical, something I anticipated, but it is not entirely so, only very minor parts of it was a musical, something that I would have liked to see more, as it is something that the Chinese film market is seriously lacking. Although the story is poor, the art style and overall mood of the film is extremely creative and likeable. Jay Chou should no doubt be credited for his eye for visuals, but sometimes he has to move away from using his good friends, as they are seriously ruining the overall quality of the film. Not a bad job himself, acting a typical Jay Chou style character. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member With a 70's aesthetic, spectacular visuals, and a West Side Story theme, Jay Chou "goes for it"...as both actor and director. Nothing subtle, here, from over-the-top Art Direction, martial arts dance numbers, to love found, lost, then tragically lost. Appreciate the craftsmanship, dedication, creative expression, and bits of Taiwanese street culture (while looking past the gangster elements...or just fast-forward those parts). Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member Second time directing and Jay Chou probably needs more practice to get it right. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member First ever chinese musical I have ever seen and it rocks! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Read all reviews
