In a near-future society, The Running Man is the top-rated show on television--a deadly competition where contestants, known as Runners, must survive 30 days while being hunted by professional assassins, with every move broadcast to a bloodthirsty public and each day bringing a greater cash reward. Desperate to save his sick daughter, working-class Ben Richards (Glen Powell) is convinced by the show's charming but ruthless producer, Dan Killian (Josh Brolin), to enter the game as a last resort. But Ben's defiance, instincts, and grit turn him into an unexpected fan favorite--and a threat to the entire system. As ratings skyrocket, so does the danger, and Ben must outwit not just the Hunters, but a nation addicted to watching him fall.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Spiritedly sprinting through grim source material, Edgar Wright's The Running Man doesn't live up to the director's high bar for inventive action extravaganzas but maintains a slick stride.

Audience Says

Though a bit of the source material’s thematic heft is softened here, The Running Man still delivers a high-octane, gripping ride supercharged by Glen Powell’s irresistible charisma.

Adam Kempenaar Filmspotting Wright juggles dystopian thrills, satire, sentiment, and slapstick, but never nails any of them. The result is a genre mashup that feels more muddled than masterful. Rated: 2.5/5 Nov 21, 2025 Full Review Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com I say change the channel and go watch something else. Rated: 1.5/4 Nov 21, 2025 Full Review Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (LAist) A $110 million mess... Between [the original and the remake], all you had to was just make one good movie, and they missed. Nov 19, 2025 Full Review John McDonald johnmcdonald.net.au For us the major interest is how this chase will end, which renders two hours of furious action merely academic. Wright is obviously hoping we’ll be so engrossed in following Ben’s next move that we’ll live imaginatively within the film moment by moment. Nov 27, 2025 Full Review Kiko Martinez The Cinesnob Podcast There’s spectacle here, but not in a good way. Edgar Wright’s creativity should've injected humor, but it’s missing throughout. Rated: C Nov 26, 2025 Full Review Mel Valentin That Shelf Wright’s nimble direction, retro-futuristic production design, and Glen Powell’s personification of a rage-filled anti-hero-turned-hero, make Wright’s adaptation a worthwhile, if ultimately frustrating, experience on the big or small screen. Rhonda S Entertaining. It departs greatly from the original movie, and I have not read the book, so I dont know how it compares to the Stephen King version of the story but it holds up well enough for entertainment. Glen Powell plays his role perfectly. William H Macy has a bit part and Arnold has a funny cameo in the movie. Definitely entertaining. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/27/25 Full Review Joey A Great movie with a lot of action Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/27/25 Full Review LaShan L I loved the action! Didn't know it's a remake. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/27/25 Full Review J Good action movie with a new spin to the original. One good reference to Arnold. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/27/25 Full Review kathy A little slow in the beginning, but had good action. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/27/25 Full Review Todd B Please Hollywood - make better movies. Hard to root for anybody in action movies anymore - this is the latest evidence. The original had charm, humor, and a satisfying finish. You wasted Powell who could have been a good hero - he was simply angry for 2+ hours. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/27/25 Full Review Read all reviews
