Rich Cline Shadows on the Wall Packed with meaning that resonates far beyond this corner of the world. Rated: 4/5 Dec 4, 2020 Full Review Tom Beasley Flickering Myth It's a nuanced depiction of people being forced to toss minor differences aside in favour of the bigger, unavoidable issues -- a lesson the West would do well to learn. Rashedul I The Salt in Our Waters (2020) is a fictional film directed by Rezwan Shahriar Sumit. This powerful film explores themes like contemporary coastal Bangladesh, the impact of climate change, local folklore, and the tension between tradition and modernity. It portrays the dual conflicts faced by coastal communities, their existential battle with nature and the struggle of reason against entrenched beliefs through a poetic lens. The narrative is not complex, rather it moves in a linear fashion. But, beneath each scene lies a rich tapestry of layered meanings. Religious fundamentalism, marginalization, womanhood, the constraints of artistic expression, and climate change all blend into a deep, poetic resonance throughout the film. The director attempts to deliver several real-world messages. For instance, the film highlights the challenges faced by fishermen during the two-month government-imposed fishing ban to conserve hilsa fish, shedding light on the harsh realities of their livelihood. It also emphasizes the importance of collective decision-making and awareness in times of natural disaster.A particularly striking element is the portrayal of how lack of education pushes marginalized communities into darkness. The character played by Fazlur Rahman Babu is one of the finest casting choices of the director. Titas Zia’s role as Rudro symbolizes awareness. The eternal conflict between the old and the new finds vivid expression in these two characters.Tasnova Tamanna’s natural performance hints at a promising future. While Shatabdi Wadud’s character may not have fully utilized his acting strengths, his performance remains solid. Ashok Bepari once again delivers well in the role of a working-class man.As the story reaches its climax, the conflict between art and belief, modernity and heritage, takes a dramatic turn. Rudro is forced to make a difficult choice between his artistic ideals and the harsh realities faced by the villagers. The film concludes with a poetic yet haunting emotion—leaving the audience with deep reflections on climate crisis, the helplessness of marginalized communities, and the social responsibilities of art.
