In a state-run mental hospital, theatrical director Jim Downs (Jose Ferrer) is convalescing after a failed suicide attempt. His wife, Ann (June Allyson), visits every day under the pretext of offering love and support, but in fact she criticizes him mercilessly for his various failings.
