Critics Consensus

The Sky Is Everywhere never quite scales the heights of profundity to which it aspires, but star Grace Kaufman proves a perfect fit for director Josephine Decker's vision.

Kimber Myers Crooked Marquee The Sky is Everywhere is most likely to enchant its Gen-Z target audience with its wildly romantic story set to a tinkling score, but its tenderness and authenticity can have a broader appeal. Rated: B+ Feb 14, 2022 Full Review Ty Burr Ty Burr's Watch List (Substack) No director conveys too-muchness like Decker, and on top of that “The Sky Is Everywhere” is very lucky to have Kaufman in the lead. Rated: 3/4 Feb 11, 2022 Full Review Joe Morgenstern Wall Street Journal [The Sky is Everywhere] embraces excess as an expression of the heroine’s mercurial spirit. Sometimes the results are excessively excessive, blithely blissed-out or simply clichéd. Mostly, though, they’re funny, affecting and endearing. Feb 11, 2022 Full Review Joshua Polanski Boston Hassle [Josephine Decker's] bold film grammar is innovative, in part, because Christian-Buddhism has never been taken seriously by a visual artist before. Jul 16, 2024 Full Review Hector A. Gonzalez Loud and Clear Reviews Josephine Decker adapts Jandy Nelson’s young adult novel The Sky is Everywhere with its quips and trinkets attached, for better or worse (mainly for the latter). Rated: 2.5/5 Feb 10, 2024 Full Review Rebecca Johnson Film Focus Online Unfortunately, The Sky Is Everywhere is another middling young adult novel adaptation that fails to pack the punch that it attempts. Though the story is lacklustre, it may be worth watching on a rainy day for its visuals and promising performances. Rated: 2/5 Jul 25, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

michael d The sky is everywhere The cinematography is aesthetically pleasing and well-done, from the camera twirls and zooms to the redwood trees that envelop most of the locations. Bereavement, coming to terms with loss and teenage angst as its central themes keep it emotionally charged, and are well portrayed by the protagonist (Grace Kaufman). Even though the plot may feel muddled sometimes, and the progression may seem stunted, it is a very enjoyable movie with important lessons to be learnt. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/21/24 Full Review Jorge C Puntos por creatividad. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/13/24 Full Review steve d The script is too cliché to offer anything impactful, but the main performance is really solid and heartfelt. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member I'm sorry but the main love interests voice was in such stark contrast to his appearance I was thrown off and could focus on nothing else. Seemed like a decent film. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review isla s I liked some aspects of this film but for the most part, I didn't feel too emotionally invested in the characters, it has to be said. I like the music playing during the film and the fact its quite imaginative - it has a daydreamy feel to it, a bit like The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. However, I just didn't feel at all connected to the overall story arc, unfortunately. Its a fairly easily forgettable film but its not entirely bad either. It's very much a film focussing on a teenage girls emotions - heartbreak etc., so it'll either appeal or not. Its not really for me but I imagine there's an audience for it who would enjoy it well enough. I wouldn't particularly recommend it, no. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review alejandro p The struggle for the loss of a loved one is complex and the film develops it in an interesting way through the protagonist. unnecessary scenes, many clichés and emotional difficulties throughout the story. The most outstanding thing is definitely the soundtrack and sound effects present in the film. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
