Pinoteau is capable of elevating himself on top of the merely commercial without being strictly artistic. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

12/30/2012 Quite funny drama comedy. Well directed and lifelike generally speaking. It could have a bit more changes and twists in the story. It is pretty simple as it is, and it has no peak moments but even so, I think that its pretty nice, fun, and really quite well acted french drama comedy from 1974. Enchanting. See more 08/17/2010 A sweet and sour teenage comedy with an incredible Isabelle Adjani. See more 01/20/2010 Very different from Le silencieux, but with Lino Ventura AND English actor Robert Hardy (whose French in Le silencieux was almost impeccable, by the way) all the same, La gifle is another quite well-known French movie by director Claude Pinoteau. Apart from some serious spy thrillers (like, again, Le silencieux and La septième cible), he also ventured on some more lighthearted stuff like La boum, La boum 2 and this relationship drama entitled La gifle. This film is not a comedy, but has some funny (though not hilarious) elements in it. It is between a laugh and a tear, really. The content is predictable and basically (too) simple, but that is all one can expect from this genre. In a nutshell, it is about frictional human relationships, and more in particular about the generation gap. One can see it all coming: Isabelle (Adjani) falls out with her father and tends to get closer to her mother. In the end things change for the better, of course, with a hint of an open ending (are Ventura and Girardot’s characters finally getting a divorce or are they perhaps getting back together – anyhow they’ll work things out between them). So the story is simple and lacking progression, though the dynamics within the scenes are definitely there. This is partly due to Adjani’s disarming teenager performance: she is the charming madcap this movie largely floats on. Ventura and Girardot are their own usual selves, which is excellent too. Adjani’s fellow students liven things up even more and create a nice background for the thematic generation gap to be painted against. I would also like to add that I liked the use of the different sorts of music as mood creators, both in the background and in the scenes themselves. See more 08/21/2009 Quite funny drama comedy.
