      Movie Info

Evil wizard Gargamel (Hank Azaria) has plagued the happy, peaceful Smurfs for a very long time. Finally, he succeeds in chasing the little blue people from their village and through a magic portal -- which transports them to Manhattan and into the life of ad executive Patrick Winslow (Neil Patrick Harris). Only three apples high and lost in the Big Apple, the Smurfs (Jonathan Winters, Alan Cumming, Katy Perry) must find a way back to their world before Gargamel tracks them down.

Should've just left them the way they are in before the movie came.

Dumb movie about Smurfs running around in NYC.

Kids will like it. Parents probably won't. Oh, and it stars Neil Patrick Harris, so that's a plus.

Light, fluffy, amusing, totally disposable, The Smurfs is an interesting take on a kiddie cartoon. Sure, most of the jokes are potty humor and it can be argued there are better ways to show off the material, but going high brow was never the intent here. Hank Azaria's Gargamel is horribly overplayed with a terribly shallow character we can almost see twirling his mustache in every scene. He's the butt of many of the jokes, though Sofia Vergara has nothing useful to do, nor is she a convincing "villain." You don't buy the love between Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays; there's no affection between the two. But know what? I laughed, I was entertained. Sue me.
