Alexandra Heller-Nicholas AWFJ.org A chilling mystery about an isolated community who capitalism left behind, The Soul Eater is a thrilling, thoughtful addition to the serial killer film tradition. Aug 5, 2024 Full Review Meagan Navarro Bloody Disgusting While the procedural elements may feel more rote, at least in an era inundated by crime thrillers, Maury and Bustillo pull from their horror toolkit and plunge into dark subject matter with aplomb. Rated: 3/5 Jul 31, 2024 Full Review Joseph Robinson Fish Jelly Films (YouTube) The Soul Eater is an audacious effort - a mix of Cocaine Bear, Longlegs, and The Menendez Brothers - that may be too bold for its own good. Rated: 3.5/5 Dec 10, 2024 Full Review Enrique Abenia Cinemanía (Spain) Its distinctive essence flows in the articulation and dynamics of the final section, a true passage of terror due to the resonances generated by its sordid and disturbing background. Sarfaraz A Alexandra Bustille and Julien Maury co-directed this French murder thriller. Starring Virginie Ledoyen and Paul Hamy. The film is an adaptation of Alexis Laipsker's eponymous novel. The story begins with two stranger law enforcement officers, a middle-aged man and a woman, who travel to a tiny hamlet to investigate a crime. Franck is in town to investigate the disappearances of over half a dozen children, while Elizabeth is attempting to investigate violent murders. The local police declare the murders of a married couple to be a fatal fight between the two, and the town's female mayor requests that the investigation be closed so that residents are not intimidated and flee an already diminishing community. The film is marketed as a horror film, based on the local legend of the Soul Eater, who is responsible for the murders and disappearances, but it has nothing to do with the horror genre. Instead, it takes several different topics and combines them into one story, about a crime of the dark web run by the town's powerful people who kidnap children for sniff videos. Additionally, there is a different angle of terrible drug abuse mixed in with the story. Overall, the film cab be categorized as mystery but not horror. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/10/25 Full Review Peter C Great detective mystery thriller, with lots of murders and disappearances. An overshadowing supernatural element keeps being mentioned throughout, keeping you guessing as to what exactly is going on. Brilliant ending answering all questions. Definitely recommend this. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/01/25 Full Review Sean H Lots to like about this French horror, the dark atmosphere, bruality and unfiltered rawness, is why French horror always makes Hollywood look amateurish Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/29/24 Full Review Aldis H Slow, derivative, incongruous, almost comical in its seriousness, yet not bad for all that. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/17/24 Full Review Derp D The overall tone and plot were compelling and effective but some of the dialogue and staging of the action were so jarringly clumsy that it’s hard not to think the directors were out of their league or out of time. A shame because there was a cracking thrilller with horror symbolism in here. Inside might well have been a fluke.
