Alexandra Heller-Nicholas AWFJ.org A chilling mystery about an isolated community who capitalism left behind, The Soul Eater is a thrilling, thoughtful addition to the serial killer film tradition. Aug 5, 2024 Full Review Meagan Navarro Bloody Disgusting While the procedural elements may feel more rote, at least in an era inundated by crime thrillers, Maury and Bustillo pull from their horror toolkit and plunge into dark subject matter with aplomb. Rated: 3/5 Jul 31, 2024 Full Review Nicholas Bell Fish Jelly Films (YouTube) For those who enjoy police procedural thrillers gorged to the gills with bizarre plot twists, The Soul Eater is must have stocking stuffer as Bustillo & Maury have concoct their best film since debuting Inside (2007). Rated: 3.5/5 Mar 21, 2025 Full Review Joseph Robinson Fish Jelly Films (YouTube) The Soul Eater is an audacious effort - a mix of Cocaine Bear, Longlegs, and The Menendez Brothers - that may be too bold for its own good. Rated: 3.5/5 Dec 10, 2024 Full Review Enrique Abenia Cinemanía (Spain) Its distinctive essence flows in the articulation and dynamics of the final section, a true passage of terror due to the resonances generated by its sordid and disturbing background. Jason W Pretty good film. Be aware it is french. It is basically True Crime meets the occult. Some great bloody scenes, but it is a slow burn. Great cinematography. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/07/25 Full Review Anthony H. The Soul Eater, a film that skillfully weaves together true crime, horror, retribution, and some gruesome gore, offers an intriguing and slow-burning narrative unlike any other. It takes you on a journey through the woods, leading you into a small town where seemingly insignificant details become pivotal elements. While I thoroughly enjoyed this film, I must admit that foreign films often lose some points due to the language barrier, which can be challenging to follow while reading alongside the film. Despite this minor setback, the overall quality of this film remains quite solid. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/25/25 Full Review Hugo S Gruesome deaths and the disappearance of local children plague a small mountain village. Two detectives investigate the macabre occurrences while they face a community rooted in old beliefs and superstitions. The real evil behind these horrifying events is far more frightening than any supernatural menace. "The Soul Eater" is a crime thriller driven by an investigative narrative that cleverly shifts from a folklore theme to a real-life horror. The audience is drawn into the darkest side of human nature. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/29/25 Full Review John W Mystery thriller from France. It really reminds me of the French series Black Spot, but worse. The Soul Eater could be a boring episode from that series. Still, you have to say that the film is at least somewhat entertaining. It does manage to create an atmosphere, and the story is a bit suspenseful too. I watched it and it was okay, but nothing you absolutely need to see. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/22/25 Full Review Logan D Two detectives investigate missing children in a small mountain village which has it's own mythology built upon a creature known as the Soul Eater. I was unaware this was the same duo that directed Inside, a delightfully visceral viewing experience. This film begins well. I was intrigued by the local lore and anticipating some supernatural causes for the missing kids. Sadly, as the film progressed, I realized this was just a police procedural film with some fine acting but a predictable endgame. Not recommended and not a horror film at all. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/31/25 Full Review prawnda s very overrated. has a few moments, overall is derivative and slow paced, very skippable. some parts of the twist ending are well done, overall the series of twists put together was well below average. the film is also just not medically or procedurally informed at all, so the investigative aspects fall apart under very light scrutiny.
