Mark Kermode Observer (UK) The live-action sequences, in which Antonio Banderas chews the pirate scenery, may not live up to the Looney Tunes madness of the cartoons, but for sheer head-scrambling craziness this is hard to beat. Rated: 4/5 Mar 29, 2015 Full Review Geoffrey Macnab Independent (UK) Intermittently, SpongeBob's latest feature is very funny indeed, even for non-devotees of the original series. Rated: 3/5 Mar 27, 2015 Full Review Wendy Ide Times (UK) Sponge Out of Water has a frenetic, Looney Tunes pacing and a head-spinning, surreal story that makes you wonder whether it's aimed at children or stoners. Rated: 4/5 Mar 27, 2015 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse Gets a little water logged when the characters hit land and turn into CGI creations, but it never loses its sense of silly whether it is above or below sea level. Rated: 3/5 Feb 2, 2021 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com I had a blast with it and found myself laughing consistently throughout the film. Xavier L I like it at least it's more unique than the first SpongeBob movie I got to say that Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/09/25 Full Review Audience Member After 10 years I still say this is one of the best movies of 2015!!! It’s been 11 years since the previous film came out A lot has changed since then from the storytelling to the writing to the animation to the jokes to the humor and pop cultural references as far as kids films Now Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies bring the beloved character back to the big screen in an all new movie The story has a pirate named Burger Beard stumbling upon a magic book; he tells the story of SpongeBob and his friends in Bikini Bottom living the life As usual Plankton wants to steal the Krabby Patty formula but all of a sudden it disappears and Mr. Krabs thinks he’s to blame SpongeBob then embarks on a mission to find the formula in order to reestablish order from Burger Beard….how else by coming into the real world Im happy to say this is 10x better than its predecessor in many ways, I was so worried they were gonna screw this up The animation is sharper, more detailed, all the characters we know and love get a chance to shine The film is littered with so many jokes, visual gags, and pop cultural references most notably Mad Max some of them so out of touch I was laughing a lot You gotta wonder at some point if the filmmakers took any LSD or substances since there’s so many mind boggling sequences like an acid trip for kids It’s a shame though the live action portion doesn’t happen until the last half but it is definitely worth the price of admission with the CGI animation and fun action With Antonio Banderas as this villain he is having a ball chewing the scenery It also has a chance to see if Plankton can actually work in a team with SpongeBob guiding him making for a good dynamic, maybe keeping things to himself is selfish after all Makes for an important theme of working together in harmony The film is very short but thankfully gets right to the point without wasting any time retaining the silliness of the source material with its nutty ness and fun lack of logic and surrealism It’s full of laughs, mayhem, the kind of crazy bonkers you’d expect from this kind of cartoon It took a long time but this long awaited sequel was definitely worth the wait for long time fans as well as newcomers! :) Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/06/25 Full Review Gavin L I love the idea that you could make it a bit bigger than your own house but you can do a little more than a few square inches and then just make the top and sides of it smaller so it looks more square so it looks better than what you’re looking at now but you could do it in a little more space in your room or a bigger room or a smaller space in the back you can do that and it will look much more like your house than it would look in your room but you could just do a small square or a square or a square or you could make a small one ☝️ or whatever but it will fit your own Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/22/25 Full Review Audience Member Watched this movie on release and then re-watched it even as kid i didn't much care for it. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/21/25 Full Review Ryland C This literally feels like a fever dream. There are so many plots in this movie that it feels like multiple SpongeBob episodes in one. It’s so hard to tell which is the real plot. What’s great about the first SpongeBob movie, is that the plot is pretty straightforward and actually went somewhere. This movie……… WHAT IS THIS ABOUT??? Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/18/25 Full Review matthias s "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water" is a strange mix of nostalgia and disappointment. The original voice cast returning is a huge win—hearing those familiar voices brings back all the childhood feels. But let’s be real: this movie doesn’t hit like the show or the first film, which are untouchable classics. The first two acts feel like a stretched-out episode—just not one of the good ones. Then the third act? Absolute chaos. SpongeBob and crew become superheroes in the real world, and it’s as bizarre as it sounds. The plot is thinner than Plankton’s schemes, and the “new” stuff feels oddly off-brand. Sure, there are funny bits, but they’re buried under a mountain of “what is happening?” Honestly, I remembered hating it more, but revisiting it is just okay-ish, not horrible. Fans want classic underwater nonsense, not land-based superhero detours. 56% feels about right. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/15/25 Full Review Read all reviews
