Nell Minow Common Sense Media Very similar to the edgy animated TV show. May 20, 2008 Full Review Micheal Compton Bowling Green Daily News As a TV series, Spongebob has proven to be quite entertaining in 30-minute doses. Stretching the running time to 90 minutes doesnt help raise the level of appreciation, though. Donavin D SpongeBob’s first outing on the big screen was meant to complete the series, the original intended ending — for me personally, when I watch it that way, it does a great job of, well, ending everything. With some great new characters, beautiful animation and an endlessly quotable lines, the SpongeBob movie is one of the best Nickelodeon has ever put out. It follows the journey SpongeBob takes to get the crown back and free Mr Krabs, all with the evil Plankton pulling the strings in the background — its fairly straightforward but it does a great job wrapping up a lot of themes and through lines from the show. SpongeBob gets the opportunity to be brave and accept his childlike nature, even using it to his advantage, he earns the respect of his boss and even becomes a manager taking the next step in the career he loves so much. This animation has always been my favorite, it hits the sweet spot of looking more modern and polished than the show while keeping the same energy and style of the series — I appreciate it more than the 3D style that more modern SpongeBob movies have adopted. The shows voice cast all return here and they all continue to bring their best, everyone had settled into a groove here and they all sound great. The new characters are serviceable but mostly act as plot drivers rather than characters that are fun in their own right though I would be lying if I said they didn’t have some great or memorable moments like everyone seeing King Neptunes bald head for the first time. The film has a great understanding of these characters and their stories and knows how to keep the energy up while remaining entertaining throughout, it keeps one thing consistent throughout and that thing is fun. The SpongeBob film is exactly what you would expect, no more and no less and what it does do, it does incredibly well. With great voice performances, a persistent silly tone throughout the film and an unyielding desire to be fun, the SpongeBob movie is something that you’d have a hard time not smiling at even if you’re unfamiliar with the show, and if you are? Do yourself a favor and watch the amazing first four seasons now. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/25/25 Full Review Josh R It's peak. Simple as. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/20/25 Full Review Ian A Well, as a man, I only got these words to describe it: (spits out tounge) Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/13/25 Full Review the Elijah S it was amazing joyful and sad at the same time when i was a child Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/11/25 Full Review Philip M 68% is a criminal rating for this masterpiece. I was expecting 90% at the absolute least. I created a rotten tomatoes account just to give this movie 5 stars. I’m not sure what else you could ask for out of the first SpongeBob movie. It has an entertaining sense of adventure, a grandiose plot, fun new aspects compared to the previous tv seasons, plenty of perfectly executed comedic relief; it’s one of the most memorable movies from my childhood because it struck me hard from a young age as such a well written film. The songs are great too! I’m not sure how it could be rated anything less than 92% and I mean that. If you’re reading this and you haven’t watched it, but you’ve watched the first 3 seasons of SpongeBob, do yourself the favor of a lifetime and experience the magic that is the SpongeBob SquarePants movie. I’m nothing but a man with taste, you can trust me. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/05/25 Full Review Ellee B. Never seen anything better Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/25/25 Full Review Read all reviews
