Based on the New York Times best-selling novel, bookstore owner A.J. Fikry's (Kunal Nayyar) life is not turning out as he expected as he struggles both emotionally and financially. After his wife's tragic death, he feels lost and left behind in the rapidly evolving world of today. As he tries to keep his store afloat, he begins to drink his sorrows away ultimately hitting rock bottom when his most prized possession, a series of Edgar Allen Poe poems, are stolen. But when a mysterious package appears at the bookstore, the unexpected arrival gives Fikry a new lease on life, and love, that are greater than he ever imagined.

Between the Hallmark-y score and certain narrative beats that, in literary form, may read as engrossing, but, on-screen, err towards the overly sugary, Fikry can't seem to find its place between the grounded and the grandiose.

For the more casual viewer that is craving a traditional tear-jerker, this more than fits the bill and is a great date-night movie for the significant other that may not appreciate Tarkovsky in the same way.

There was a total of six people in the theater at the time we went to see the movie in the late afternoon. Two of the people present had also read the book. We all liked the movie. Kunal Nayyar in a serious role played the part of his character very well and demonstrated his depth as an actor in what was a real departure from his former role as Rajesh Koothrapali in the Big Bang Theory comedy series. Mr. Nayyar also had an excellent supporting cast. Looking forward to seeing Kunal Nayyar in more serious roles like A.J. Fikry in the future.

The Storied Life of AJ Fikry is a rich and lovely story - with just the right amount of humor and levity mixed in - about life, love, and the importance of investing in people and things we love, and carrying on in spite of inevitable hardships. Excellently cast and acted. Very true to the book. We need more books and movies like The Storied Life of AJ Fikry in our world!

A little quirky good story line. Varies from the book. Good acting. At times, the transitions are a little off. I would recommend seeing it. Tuesday 5 totally worth it.
