Flora Belle Farr Austin Chronicle Directing his fourth feature film, Charlie McDowell (The One I Love) draws a layered performance from young Matthews in her film debut. Sep 25, 2025 Full Review Lisa Kennedy New York Times The Summer Book offers a loving portrait of budding and fading. Sep 19, 2025 Full Review Nell Minow RogerEbert.com It is a haiku of a movie, conveying profound thoughts about time, memory, loss, and nature through a simplified, meditative, cinematic language of exquisite images and gentle music. Rated: 3.5/4 Sep 19, 2025 Full Review Sarah Boslaugh TheArtsStl The pace is unhurried, matching the feel of reading the novel The Summer Book, but the film feels talkier and more heavy-handed, as if it feels the need to deliver life lessons directly to the audience rather than letting them emerge. Rated: 6/10 Oct 21, 2025 Full Review Dustin Chase Galveston Daily News Meditative and poetic, “The Summer Book” is a soothing sensory experience reminding us to appreciate what and who is around us. Dawn M Proof that Glenn Close is the GOAT! This film (yes, a film, not a movie) is a slow simmer, but holds so many life lessons from a quieter time devoid of the static of technology. The land and seascape is beautiful. Makes you want to live off the grid, if only for a weekend. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/12/25 Full Review Johann A I watched "Summer Book" 3 times in festivals and in Helsinki. What a great movie, specially for the period we are living in. A movie wich gives space to the important things in life, so easy going, but also so deeply touching. I could not imagine, that the spirit of the book can be translated into a movie. But Charlie McDowell absolutely made it. Glenn Close is at her best. Whenever have we seen an actress who is able to play an old, sick person, close to death in that way: how difficult every step is, every breath, and all the daily things... and then alone on the island she feels walking nude through the forrest that she is balanced with the world.. even with her backside she is able to act brilliantly... with so many movies overloaded with informations, overacted, this is a wonderful relaxing contrast and is my film highlight of the year. Glenn Close should win award after award after award.. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/30/25 Full Review Susan K This is a quiet movie. While the story is mostly seen through the eyes of a young girl, I found it more about an old woman facing her mortally and not wanting to give up. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/29/25 Full Review Jeff L Good summer read if you like napping as you hear the water lapping on the sand. The movie goes nowhere slow. Close , who I love, gets to hobble Around in her Mammy Yocum mask straining to almost die through out. Kid is okay and dad is deadly Boring and makes me wonder if his wife died because of it! Unless you are a Close buff , pass. No scriptwriter prof would green light this flat adventure to ennui . Movie Krank gives cold salty popcorn rating Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/27/25 Full Review Moody C It’s not for everyone and I believe some will love it while casual movie goers will hate it. Very similar to Downton Abbey where nothing really happens only less talking here and more reflecting into beautiful cinematography. You can do worst for 90 mins since it’s at least a short, therapeutic watch. Just don’t expect the feel good movie of the year!
