James Berardinelli ReelViews Although the screenplay occasionally falters as a result of the predictable melodrama, The Swan is elevated by Martin Neumeyer's cinematography (there are times when I wished this was a travelogue) and Grima Valsdottir's committed performance. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 17, 2018 Full Review Robert Abele Los Angeles Times Though occasionally overwrought in its ethereal tangents, "The Swan" has strong things going for it... Aug 17, 2018 Full Review Sheri Linden Hollywood Reporter It doesn't always manage to stay afloat, but its center never wavers, with Valsdóttir delivering a bracingly unsentimental portrayal of a perceptive outsider weathering an often grim awakening. Aug 10, 2018 Full Review Ben Croll Screen International Benefitting from US-trained, Iceland-based filmmaker Ása Helga Hjörleifsdóttir's controlled direction, the film delivers a dark coming-of-age tale through the young lead's uncertain perception, tinged with uneasy implications and poetic flights of fancy. Feb 13, 2020 Full Review Victoria Duclós Sibuet EscribiendoCine A good opportunity to immerse yourself in a different culture in a story that is already quite universal. greg h Iceland ,for such a small population, really punches well above its weight.Best to summarise this movie by two key scenes.Too late the farmers daughter discovers the love letters written by the farm hand, conveying his romantic sentiments. And the very last scene where the daughter wins back her lost "love",only to realise it is little, compared to the missed love by the now dead farm hand. And to the young girl ,this is about kindred spirits, shared by the little girl, old beyond her years, the farm hand and the daughter. And only one saw the situation, took steps to rectify the situation, only to have her good intentions tragicly side-tracked. Mind you there is a moral...how carnal lust can obscure something much deeper Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/18/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
