In the 1960s, Cambridge University student and future physicist Stephen Hawking (Eddie Redmayne) falls in love with fellow collegian Jane Wilde (Felicity Jones). At 21, Hawking learns that he has motor neuron disease. Despite this -- and with Jane at his side -- he begins an ambitious study of time, of which he has very little left, according to his doctor. It's amazing to see Redmayne disappear early on in the film and watch what fees like the actual Hawking for the story of his love life and early career. The other performances are great too but Redmayne can't possibly get enough praise for his portrayal of the scientist. Especially in the middle part the film could have used some trimming or emphasis on more interesting parts but especially the beginning and ending are very sweet and engaging, worthy of the great human being portrayed here.

There's always a few British films every few years which strike the nail on the head in terms of acting, story, and cinematography. Despite it being an obvious biopic, the film is riddled with humour which suggests that even Hawking himself is humorous and lively beyond just work and intellect beneath the grand intellect exterior he's exuded via his amazing catalogue of work in physics and cosmology. Part of my interest in the film is that it's not merely focused on Stephen himself, but also on his wife Jane Wilde-Hawking as the two individuals feel first pulled together in the same direction before fording differing paths. Part of the praise must go to the unbelievable story and the two people behind it all, and part to the two amazing actors who gave the film life on multiple layers.

According to the movies either you get the girls or you're a genius, you can't have both. (Makes me wonder how they'll handle a woman genius) And how does one portray mucho schmartz on film anyway? Well, you've gotta focus on the exterior stuff, which in the case of the renowned Stephen Hawkings means a physically debilitating disease, a tight network of supportive friends, and your wife attending plenty of church choir practice. Soap opera, yes, but with tea instead of beer.

The Theory of Everything goes far above your standard biopic. Not only are Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones extraordinary in their respective roles, but the fact that it was adapted from Jane's book about her life with Mr. Hawking rather than a to-the-point biography of him makes the movie feel fresh too.
