Based on the play by Anton Chekhov, this drama focuses on the three Prozorov sisters -- Olga (Jeanne Watts), Masha (Joan Plowright), and Irina (Louise Purnell) -- who long to escape their small Russian town and return to Moscow, where they grew up. Entering the women's melancholy orbit are military men such as Dr. Chebutikin (Laurence Olivier) and Colonel Vershinin (Alan Bates), who serve mostly to complicate the sisters' lives, particularly when Vershinin and Masha begin an ill-advised affair.

Audience Member this is a story that can be re-told in all cultures and time periods. It did drag at times but the message was strong and clear. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member A disappointment. Well, not really, I was expecting something like this, but not for it to be so... dull. It's another attempt at the "not quite theatre, not quite film" experience that Olivier and the National Theatre tried with Burge's Othello - that was a far more successful endeavor. This really needs a bit more cinematic oomph that Olivier doesn't give it, although there are a handful of good moments. Weird point though: he used stock footage from The Prince and the Showgirl at one point, so Marilyn Monroe can be seen in this film. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member Pity there aren't more adaptations of Chekhov' work, but this one is pretty decent. It's a kick to watch Laurence Olivier as doctor Chebutykin. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member A beautifully acted and directed version of the play. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member Pretty good, well directed and excellent acting. Not my favourite Chekhov, but still very good. Not for everyone though. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Cast is amazing, Plowright is beyond amazing. Staginess creates a bit too much distance for me.
