Mark H. Harris Black Horror Movies The Tokoloshe has to be considered amongst the cream of the crop of homegrown African horror cinema. Rated: 3.7/5 Dec 13, 2019 Full Review Carolyn Mauricette View From The Dark I think a lot of movie-goers will resonate with the characters and themes of The Tokoloshe. May 16, 2019 Full Review Phumlani S Langa City Press (South Africa) This may not be as pioneering as the work of someone like Alfred Hitchcock, but it's a creative step in South African film making. Rated: 3/5 Nov 5, 2018 Full Review Kat Hughes THN A solid debut that is let down by one small decision, The Tokoloshe is a chilling story with some very strong moments. Audience Member The Tokoloshe is a well-shot South African horror flick that really digs into folklore while touching on sa trauma. The lead actress is intense and convincing, never going overboard. The film’s solid, but it runs out of steam in places and could’ve explored how in African folklore the tokoloshe preys on young girls that I had to research for myself. Could’ve benefited from exploring the folklore more but maybe it’s more well know lore in South Africa. It also leans a bit too much on music for jump scares. With a proper release, like on Netflix, this low-budget horror could’ve gotten some well-deserved attention. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/12/24 Full Review Melani M Very good movie, I definitely recommend to watch. More a drama than a horror, though. Some parts of the story could be better explained, and the creature does not exactly resemble Tokoloshe as it is described in folklore. Music theme also impressive. All in all, very decent work. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/14/24 Full Review Carel H Poorly written, I get the feeling that the writer had too many ideas, and therefore diverted from the folklore, made it difficult to watch. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/19/23 Full Review Audience Member A film with great potential. The Tokoloshe as the manifestation of sexual abuse/assault is powerful but the film loses the audience around seemingly gratuitous plot devices and neglected moments of character catharsis. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Not a horrible thriller but definitely not memorable or scary. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member "Try Harder. Try Again." Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Read all reviews
