Reviews 89% Fewer than 50 Ratings Audience Score While Hollywood proves too cautious to deal with Adolph Hitler's rise to power in the 1930s, Charlie Chaplin is the exception, crafting "The Great Dictator" as a direct and utterly satirical response to the growing threat of the Third Reich. Using behind-the-scenes film footage rescued from Chaplin's Swiss villa, Kevin Brownlow's documentary explores this unique confrontation between one of the 20th century's most beloved entertainers and its most notorious dictator. Kenneth Branagh narrates this dual biography of Charlie Chaplin and Adolf Hitler. It is coincidental that they had anything in common. This really illustrates how different they were despite the mustaches. The most interesting part about Hitler was how he used the medium of film to spread his hateful propaganda more widely than his public speeches could. The movie spends more time on Chaplin though and how a concept for a Napoleon picture morphed into a more urgent film about a certain contemporary dictator. This doc contains some behind the scenes color footage from Charlie's brother Sydney's home movie camera of The Great Dictator, which is included more fully on the Criterion Collection disc as well. There are a wide variety of interview subjects discussing the lives of both of these men. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
