Ignatiy Vishnevetsky AV Club [Wadlow's] direction is too tongue in cheek to create actual excitement or suspense, but doesn't aspire to a level of humor any deeper than intentional clich. Rated: C Nov 13, 2016 Full Review Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com It's not action-packed enough, not funny enough, and the characters aren't memorable enough. Rated: 2/4 Nov 11, 2016 Full Review Chris Nashawaty Entertainment Weekly If Netflix is serious about becoming a major player in the original-movies game, they're going to have to do better than True Memoirs of an International Assassin. Rated: C Nov 10, 2016 Full Review Miles Surrey The Ringer True Memoirs of an International Assassin would've benefited from embracing the inherent stupidity of being the Kevin James Spy Movie rather than trying, and failing, to punch above its weight. Mar 27, 2020 Full Review Renee Schonfeld Common Sense Media Occasionally funny fish-out-of-water comedy is violent. Rated: 2/5 Nov 29, 2016 Full Review Brian Orndorf Blu-ray.com If you've seen one James endeavor, you've already seen "True Memoirs," which serves up the same slapstick the actor is known for. Audience Member I watched The Lost City before watching this and thought that it would be pretty similar. Which it was, in the sense that an author gets to live out their written adventures. But it was less exciting because it was rather all over the place. Felt like it was trying to do too much and the characters hardly had any chemistry. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/10/24 Full Review Josh K It is alright but not the best non of the characters are really memeroble and just a movie you will froglet about. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/27/24 Full Review Rory B I thought it was a decent movie at best but at least it isn't a total piece of garbage like Jack and Jill. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/20/24 Full Review Steve C It is just an easy to watch movie. I enjoyed watching it the plot is nuts and the predicament that Kevin James's character ends up in is just as insane but for some rough action with a bit of comedy this ticked a box for me. Actually good watching a movie that is not pretending to be anything but fun. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/24 Full Review Sanad A Kevin James amuses me. He's consistently familiar, lacking the range of someone like the late John Candy, but there's something about his relatable everyman persona that's appealing. In "True Memoirs of an International Assassin" from 2016, he portrays Sam, an insurance man who pens a fictional tale about an international hit man. Sam seeks help from his former operative friend, Amos (Ron Rifkin), to add authenticity to his book. One day, Amos shares the story of an international assassin, The Ghost, who vanished and was presumed dead, though he claims it's not for the book. Before you know it, Sam has woven this phantom into his story. As his details turn out to be a little too accurate, he quickly finds himself in a mess of trouble. There are some genuinely amusing performances, particularly from Kelen Coleman as Sam's agent/publisher. Her office is at Starbucks, and she changes her name with each coffee order to avoid being recognized by the numerous writers there. Andy Garcia shines as El Toro; Zulay Henao portrays a tough and commanding lone female agent in Venezuela; Andrew Howard delivers a humorous performance as Anton Masovich, strutting around with a booming voice and dispatching people. The entire cast was exceptional. This is an action-packed film, so anticipate explosions and plenty of fighting. It's all in good fun. After all, it's Kevin James - and right now, he was just what I needed. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/15/23 Full Review Alexander G Nice idea, but the film just doesn't want to take off. Neither really exciting nor really funny. At least not too boring. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/06/23 Full Review Read all reviews
