... filmmakers Jennifer Kroot and Bill Weber have captured that zest with a joyous filmmaking style of their own: breezy editing, fun '70s graphics and the use of great archival footage from the city's past. It's all great fun, from beginning to end. Go to Full Review
David Rooney The Hollywood Reporter 06/26/2017
With candor, humor and poignancy, Kroot's entertaining documentary depicts an artist who continued to seek his bigoted father's approval even as he embraced a life as a proud gay man that his parents could never condone. Go to Full Review

It's an eloquent portrayal of an urban community moving from the highs of sexual freedom in the 70s... to the devastating reality of AIDS, to a "post"-AIDS world where freedom and prudence are lovingly if precariously balanced. Go to Full Review

johann m 06/13/2020 This documentary celebrates Armistead Maupin, one of the world's most beloved storytellers, following his evolution from a conservative son of the Old South into a gay rights pioneer whose novels inspired millions to re-claim their lives. The creator of the 'Tales of the City' series of novels shows himself to be a poignant, wise old man like any other, but one who had to overcome many obstacles in his life to get where he is now. With such a creative and progressive mind, he managed to break many of the taboos of society. See more 12/05/2017 A perfect testament to a wonderful man. See more 03/27/2017 While this is more suited for the small screen, it was a pleasure to watch this entertaining, touching and occasionally revealing documentary on the author of the Tales of the City series, amongst others, on a big screen at this year's Flare Festival. Not only does it provide insightful background information about his books which I always devour with relish, it is also an autobiographical account of a gay man who was brought up conservative in the 60s, liberated in the 70s and achieved great success in the 80s, while reflecting upon the history of the San Francisco gay community, of which Maupin is a prominent figure during those times. Effectively and wittily compiled with chaptering that mirrors those in his books, this is a must-see for any Maupin and TOTC fans as well as a historical record of the Gay Liberation movement in the 70s and 80s.
