Jonathan K Nov 17 It's weird, but it ends even weirder. The musical number at the end credits is so bad and so strange, and not in a "good bad" way, just annoying. I don't think this is a very good movie. I'm kind of surprised to see it's Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. It's pretty weird and mostly unfunny, despite its attempts. It's like "weird funny" sometimes, but not actual funny. The direction and tone feel kind of all over the place. I get that it's supposed to shift around and be strange, dark, and comedic all mixed together, but I think it could be a little bit more cohesive if the direction was better. I'll give credit to the backstory and character development, and Ryan Reynolds' acting is pretty good, actually. My favorite part was the visual shift for his character when he's medicated versus when he's not, and how his home looks to other people versus how he sees it. That visual shift of reality versus delusion is really cool. I feel like there were opportunities for more striking visuals, especially in the bowling alley at the end, if maybe there was more budget. Overall it's a little misguided and somehow kind of drags. The novelty of the talking pets, while humorous on a minor level, wore off rather quickly. I can say that the plot was very predictable and just plain sad. This poor, extremely mentally ill person's life is seen through an almost comical, pulp lens. Am I supposed to be entertained by this? I don't know, maybe some are. Do people idealize or even fantasize about this kind of thing? Maybe some do, and this movie is for them, I guess. Serial killer movies in general are really not my thing, like at all...especially when not even from a horror movie point of view. Extra half star for the musical number in the credits. In general though, I would say to Skip with a capital "S". See more Lluvia A May 3 Watched this on a whim. I thought it was so slow. There needed to be more comedy in this dark comedy. I was pretty bowled over (not an intentional pun/play on words), the first time. That was due to surprise that Reynolds played a role like this, long ago, and due to the genre which was somewhat new to me, and due to the thematic material and content. Yet, it was done so extraordinarily well. I love the casting, the cinematography, the voices (haha). No, really, and I need to go check who did the voiceovers for his pets. This is not a movie I expected to be drawn back to, but I was recently. And noticed so much more. It's not for everyone. But I appreciate it. See more Read all reviews
