Evan S I remember loving this movie as a child and it hasn't lost anything, even rewatching as an adult. Beautiful animation and story, and toad is the best. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a hidden gem. When Studio Ghibli and Watership Down (1978) are the first comparisons that come to mind, you ought to know you are talking about something a cut above most english-language animation. The film remains faithful to the source material, with much of the dialogue lifted straight off the page. Mole, Ratty, and the river ground the plot without being overshadowed by Toad's adventures as in many other adaptions. In fact, the film is at its strongest in its treatment of the book's less commonly adapted chapters. It does full justice to the Piper at the Gates of Dawn and Wayfarers All, conveying their sense of wanderlust and natural mysticism with all the subtle power of the original writing. For any lover of Kenneth Graham's classic, or any lover of well-done animation, or any lover of stories that speak to the wonder and whimsy of the child in all of us, this is a treasure.
