      Critics Consensus

Lea Thompson proves as capable behind the camera as her daughters are before it in , though its charming sensibilities are at times overshadowed by an inconsistent script.

b s wasn't sure what i was getting into at first, but i really enjoyed this movie. i am sure that it will be relegated to the 'chick flick' genre and brushed off, but it was funny and sweet and oddly relateable. i'd recommend it. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member I probably had no business watching this 2.2 Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/28/21 Full Review daniel p I thought it was a nice movie, nothing surprising but I didn't go into it thinking it would be. Solid acting from the cast, worth taking a look. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review steve d The acting is great and the dialog smart, the story is a bit uneven but it is a lot of fun. It is also wonderful to see the family together. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member My sister in law and I watched it together tonight,.. we have so many questions. Why was the guys being interviewed for is my main one. Like what even happened. It was ok but not worth the time to watch it. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member If you're a 20-something in a dysfunctional family, struggling to find purpose, and meandering through life, you'll be delighted by its over the top script. Leah Pickett Chicago Reader Given that the most affecting love stories involve the sisters and their mother, the few scenes with this close-knit trio are the film's highlights. Jun 21, 2018 Full Review Bob Mondello NPR's All Things Considered For a film that marks both a screenwriting debut and a big screen directing debut, "The Year Of Spectacular Men" makes very few rookie mistakes, and the ones it does are easily outweighed by the snap of the dialogue. Jun 15, 2018 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times Not everything works, but the Deutch sisters are a delight in every scene they share, and Madelyn has an unusual screen presence and a feel for the absurd that marks this 27-year-old as a talent to watch. Jun 15, 2018 Full Review Steven Prokopy Third Coast Review The Year of Spectacular Men felt like a nonstop exercise in trying my patience -- from the unbearable, rambling, pointless screenplay to every actor in this film trying to convince us that something deep is going on here. Jun 16, 2020 Full Review Dominic Griffin Spectrum Culture The Year of Spectacular Men is populated by such a charming, lovable core cast that it remains entertaining despite some of its less effective storytelling tics. Rated: 3/5 Jul 17, 2019 Full Review Rachel Wagner rachelsreviews.net Unfortunately, the script was just too uneven for me to recommend. Rated: 4/10 Feb 25, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews
