      Critics Consensus

The Yellow Birds has a strong cast and a worthy message, but they're both lost in this war drama's rote, clichéd story.

Georgan G While this movie had an honest take on war, the plot just never got much going except the horrors of war. Two buddies are together from boot camp on in to Syria. The acting is acceptable, but the film never says anything new or engaging. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/12/23 Full Review Barry J Why would Jennifer Aniston do this movie? The story is weak and even with the really good cast. They couldn't save it. Once it's over. All I could say is. I want my time back. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/11/23 Full Review James A Either they didn't have a military advisor on set or completely ignored them. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/17/23 Full Review 120soloshadow It was very poor war movie about the Iraq war. For example, at the weapon qualification range. No ear plugs, Soldiers wearing their soft caps. (They would of had on their helmet). Was they supposed to be Zero their weapon or qualify? They were just shooting at paper targets. In theater, Soldiers not wearing their body armor. Unsnapped helmets, calling the SGT, Serg, writing Kilgore on their helmets. They showed them drinking in theater. That was a BIG NO GO! The SGT manning the SAW, it would of been manned by a lower enlisted SM. After that I had change it. No wonder it only made $58k in theaters. Very bad war movie! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Kristen Lopez Spectrum Culture The Yellow Birds doesn't say much of anything outside of the mundane. The trio of young men at its center are compelling enough, but the entire ordeal feels like a mash-up of countless other movies. Rated: 2/5 Jul 10, 2018 Full Review Rex Reed Observer As "war is hell" movies go, this one is better than usual. Rated: 3/4 Jun 15, 2018 Full Review Godfrey Cheshire RogerEbert.com A rather dispiriting slog of a movie. Rated: 2/4 Jun 15, 2018 Full Review Joanne Laurier World Socialist Web Site Yellow Birds ends up being all too nonjudgmental and restricts itself for the most part to little more than immediate emotional realities. Aug 7, 2020 Full Review Rachel Wagner rachelsreviews.net Alden Ehrenreich and Ty Sheridan were both great and the cinematography is stunning. Rated: B- Mar 13, 2019 Full Review Mae Abdulbaki Punch Drunk Critics Although the cinematography is beautiful and the film has a lot of potential, it's far too slowly paced and doesn't have enough depth for the heavy material it takes on.
