Robert Abele Los Angeles Times Though not the most sure-footed of superhero entries, as an offbeat perspective on the genre, "They Call Me Jeeg" merits an enthusiast's look. Mar 16, 2017 Full Review John DeFore Hollywood Reporter Comfortable with sleaze but a far cry from being Italy's answer to Deadpool, the pic isn't funny or daring enough to make much of an entry into a spandex-saturated American market. Mar 14, 2017 Full Review Jay Weissberg Variety Italy finally gets its own superhero, and the results are surprisingly gritty and thoroughly enjoyable. Mar 14, 2017 Full Review Emilie Black Cinema Crazed ... an interesting take on superheroes and superhero mythology as well as on criminals and what really motivates people to do what they do. Rated: 3.5/5 Apr 19, 2020 Full Review Ard Vijn ScreenAnarchy By grounding the whole film in a gritty reality, and basing the film's humor on deadpan absurdity rather than slapstick, They Call Me Jeeg Robot becomes something I've never seen before. Jan 9, 2020 Full Review Ed Travis Cinapse What superhero cinema really needs is a little weirdness; some unpredictability... and Italy has heard the call and responded with They Call Me Jeeg Robot. Martino N The perfect film to state that writing a good movie requires a pen only. Great acting, good direction, only limit is the grotesque representation of "superheroes features". Due to the low budget probably the movie would have been better if the plot had enphasized more gangstar movie features. Overall, it was a revelation in Italy, but I ask myself what the movie can bring to an international table Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/05/24 Full Review Tony n A good Italian science fiction! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/17/24 Full Review Freeman D A superhero movie in Tarantino sauce, a must see Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/04/23 Full Review Tony S A gritty and violent story about a social outcast in Rome. Who, amidst city's bombing turmoil, comes into super power and learns, that with great power comes with great responsibility, all that jazz. It's punctuated by a very weird relationship of our protagonist and a woman, either autistic or with some kind of mental problems. Who acts like she 12, completely stuck in that mentality, obsessed with a titled anime series 'Steel Jeeg' and seeing the world through the prism of its characters. Their romance is really uncomfortable to watch and the movie knows this, clearly playing up how broken these two are. The more you watch, the less you understand why they licensed anime series to begin with. Anime it self is directly shown multiple times but nothing comes from it. It could've been literally anything as far as plot concerned. Maybe this series had cult status in Italy. Ilenia Pastorelli's acting as Alessia is borderline irritating too. If she is supposed to be a pitiful character with a tragic fate. Her screaming and being deliberately aloof really clashes with this intention. The antagonist, Fabio is great and entertaining, I've never seen someone punching a grandma with so much glee. The movie is tightly directed. Really driving that urban superhero plot into a very satisfying conclusion. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/27/21 Full Review natas n A pathetic amount of trash. A bunch of empty and depressing characters. One of the worse italian contemporary movies. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member An amazing blend of US Superhero theme with Japanese evil character and Italian drama. The vision was enjoyable and never boring. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Read all reviews
