      They Remain

      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

They Remain relies on rich atmosphere to effectively establish a sense of creeping dread that's almost enough to cover for its nagging narrative deficiencies.

Audience Member My review has the same amount of interesting plot as this film. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member DNF - i thought it started out strong, but nothing kept happening. eventually I got bored & left the room; came back & it was STILL ON. this movie is way too long for it's own good. i won't be watching it again. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member The movie never made any sense. Alot of suspense but never any detail as to what is actually happening. Time I will never get back. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member It kept seeming like it was just about to get real interesting, but then it never did... I can't really say that I didn't enjoy They Remain, but it was definitely wierd. Weird's fine, the problem is that it never capitalises on that weirdness. Was hoping to see something more from Chidi than plain faced reactions to awkward poetry. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Way too slow, too boring for the first hour... I dozed off in the first fifteen minutes. It doesn't gets much more interesting and the actual premise of the movie never kicks into effect and it never fully embraces the potential craziness. Some really good camera shots and camera work but this maybe could have benefitted from a quicker pace and a shorter runtime and a different ending. All that slow, nicely shot buildup but the end does not justify the means so all it really did was string people along for 100 minutes. 1 of 5 Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member Do not waste your time. Nothing happens in the first 1 hour and 20 minutes of this basic, poor attempt at entertainment. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Adam Nayman The Ringer What They Remain lacks in novelty it more than makes up for in poisonously paranoid atmosphere. Jul 31, 2018 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times "They Remain" does what it means to do. It makes the natural feel threateningly alien. Mar 8, 2018 Full Review Bilge Ebiri Village Voice The whole story, such as it is, seems to exist on the level of metaphor, but even metaphors need some definition and weight to keep us interested. Mar 2, 2018 Full Review Adrienne McIlvaine Vague Visages Suspense and tension aren’t strictly necessary to this kind of Lovecraftian horror, but even so, the film suffocates under the weight of its own portentousness. Feb 6, 2024 Full Review Leigh Monson Substream Magazine We're left with a dull, overlong nature walk with an experimental art film spliced into its center. That's something less than horrifying. Rated: 1/5 Oct 1, 2020 Full Review Bill Arceneaux Neaux Reel Idea Oblong and perhaps "above" traditional storytelling, but what it hammers home is the overwhelming chaos of our Universe. And it hammers that well. Rated: 4/5 May 4, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews
