Critics Consensus

Energetic, self-deprecating performances and enough guffaw-inducing humor make up for the flaws in This Is the End loosely written script.

Larushka Ivan-Zadeh metro.co.uk There are some terrific one-liners, most of them insults...But this is a string of character gags, not a film, and the narrative barely putters along. Rated: 3/5 Sep 5, 2017 Full Review Dan Simolke Shadow and Act Luckily, when the jokes hit, they hit hard, and it's almost always at least entertaining. Rated: B- Aug 14, 2017 Full Review Wesley Morris Grantland There's wonder here that films with quadruple the effects budget would kill for. Rated: A- Aug 20, 2024 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson With comedic crudeness levels that hit all kinds of wrong and leave very few stones unturned, "This Is the End" will either be something you can sit back and love for its audacity and parody or absolutely loathe for its vanity and stupidity Rated: 3/5 Sep 4, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Much of the movie goes by with almost nothing of significance happening beyond these actors goofing around together, and this is enjoyable until the formulaic plot takes over, and we lose interest. Blu B It's....interesting and unique but kind of a mess. It's half decently made all around. The setup is interesting and it merges a disaster flick and comedy togeter ten times better than disaster movie ever could. Problem is it feels like two different flicks especially the final 20 minutes where the demons and post apocalyptic wasteland don't really match the asetics and tone of the first half. Theres lots of first half product placements, references, and if you don't know any or the majority of these actors who are just playing themselves, you'll be kind of lost at times. Than it tries hamming in a redemption message out of nowhere in the ending which feels kind of out of nowhere as well. Kind of weird for a movie with tons of dicks and stoner humor to have it out of nowhere. I wish everyone was playing characters rather than themselves because while the performances feel 100% nautral, they can feel a bit lazy also. Jonah Hill isn't bad but straight disappears at points. Franco is great and easily the best one here. Everyone else is kind of hit or miss. Watson is great too. The gags aren't bad. There is some great laughs here but there is lots of reference humor to the actors other works and again it can be over your head if you haven't seen them like Pineapple Express. In terms of story it feels like stuff just sort of happens at certain points but it does keep all 6 of them together most of the time. So it doesn't feel jumpy really. It's just it isn't the tightest thing, VERY dumb, and feels like two different flicks at times. If your a fan of any actors in this than 100% give this a watch. If your not that familiar than skipping it isn't the biggest worry. If it just toned down the reference humor and had them play actual characters, this probably would be good. It's close though as is. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/06/24 Full Review Mads T This is among the worst movies I ever watched. I like the actors - and based on the plot I cant help but think people 'like it' because they like the actors. I only have to believe that for someone like Emma Watson to star in it - she must have lost a bet. Very few jokes hit - and the plot is ridiculous in a non polished, non engaging way. The best joke in the movie is an ad for Carls Jr. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/01/24 Full Review John K I just re-watched this movie for the fourth and a half time. Even on re-watch it holds up, and I find it to be one of the best comedies I've seen in my life (looking at 70), right up there with It's a Mad Mad Mad World. And it perfectly captures the Hollywood celebrity dysfunction in a self-depricating hilarious way, with a good ratio of crudeness (something not available to earlier comedies like IAMMMW). Loved all the cameos, especially at the party/sinkhole scene. One of my favorite movies of all genres, and probably in my top 5 for comedies. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/24/24 Full Review James E A culmination of low brow humor in the best way. This is more of a string of one liners and jokes than a film, but it works, and the friendships between the cast of felt on camera. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/20/24 Full Review Lukas K It's funny and I love the cast for this movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/25/24 Full Review Crazy, hilarious over-the-top metaphysical sci-fi-fantasy apocalyptic meta-comedy, featuring real actors playing comically ridiculous versions of themselves. I Love it!🔥😎❤️ Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/16/24 Full Review Read all reviews
