Robert Daniels 812filmreviews Sterile. Cerebral. Methodical. Those are the best words to describe Writer and Director Cory Finley's Thoroughbreds. Rated: 3/4 Aug 27, 2018 Full Review Andrea Gronvall Chicago Reader Cory Finley uses the clipped dialogue of film noir to heighten the sense of menace. Jul 27, 2018 Full Review Donald Clarke Irish Times It's sharp. It's clever. It features a delightful final performance from Anton Yelchin... Rated: 4/5 Apr 13, 2018 Full Review JD Duran InSession Film Thoroughbreds isn’t going to be for everyone. It’s methodical, it’s not interested in being horror film and it attempts to upend your expectations. Rated: A Aug 7, 2024 Full Review Tina Kakadelis Beyond the Cinerama Dome Thoroughbreds is a dark delight. Deeply comedic moments are intermixed with trepidation and tied together with standout performances by Cooke and Taylor-Joy. A cult classic in the making. Jul 25, 2023 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand There’s a wicked little satire under the cultivated surfaces and carefully groomed front, while the chilly alienation elevates this teen killer thriller with a mix of psychological drama and cool neo-noir. elana k The right kind of wacky entertainment for Saturday night viewing. Don't be tempted to read too much into the stilted dialogue as there's a tinge of meaninglessness to it. Great performances by both female leads! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/23/24 Full Review Audience Member Can you get away with murder and how would you do it? Olivia Cooke, Anya Taylor-Joy and the late Anton Yelchin Lily is a rich girl and feels everything, on the other hand Amanda can't feel anything turning into a social outcast imitating human emotions These two are childhood friends; Lily is getting sick of her garbage stepfather running her whole life even pushing her to go to boarding school so Amanda suggests they murder him to free her of his grip First though they need a plan even as far as getting a handgun from a fellow student/drug dealer Tim The movie is divided into chapters showing the progression of their lives going from one thing to the next Think of it as 'American Psycho' meets 'Heathers' Takes the issues of the young and privileged turning them into something violent The girls here are incapable of empathy yet the viewing is weird, funny and at times thought-provoking with plenty of sharp dialogue Serves as an unsettling character study of potential psychopaths with a stage play presence Plus it doesn't have to provide easy answers These girls bring out each other's worst qualities the more time they spend together realizing that they are thoroughbred humans in a world that doesn't raise them the right way Lily in particular you can see her slowly losing herself with each moment almost to the breaking point Even though they were bred from a long line of the best blood relatives they still have their own issues to work out albeit in a violent and unforgiving capacity yet they have the uncommon strength and endurance to survive it All of it slowly builds up to a final shot that'll leave you somewhat satisfied in a twisted sense Cooke and Joy are brilliant in this with smooth direction by Corey Finley Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/09/24 Full Review Alec B Cooke and Taylor-Joy both give excellent performances, but the script is completely devoid of any real ideas. Its just nihilism for its own sake. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/05/24 Full Review James B interesting and boring at the same time. i saw it on hulu. Anton Yelchin as the druggie loser hitman was the best part of the film i wish he was in the movie more. The two lead actresses are good. spoiler: I didnt like how the chick blamed her friend at the end didnt like the outcome good acting slow burn dark thriller interesting scenery nice mansion. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/18/23 Full Review Garrett P A well-directed, perfectly acted film, that causes us to question who the villain of the story is at every turn. Though the movie itself is hard to remember, the execution of the climax is hard to forget. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/29/23 Full Review Michael K Great performances by Taylor-Joy and Cooke. Stays true to its dark intentions and doesn't wimp out in the end like so many more mainstream films do. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/04/23 Full Review Read all reviews
