Real estate agent Scott Grimes (Gary Cole) and his wife are expecting their first child. But Scott's dreams of a happy life come crashing down when Sue dies during childbirth, leaving a shellshocked Scott to care for their infant daughter. Though he turns to his mother-in-law, Margaret (Colleen Dewhurst), and others for help, Scott is overwhelmed by both his grief and the strain of being a single parent, and he begins to think about offering little Katie up for adoption.
