steve d It works fairly well all things considered. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Inept loose adaptation of the ed gein story. Lots of jump cuts and the soundtrack contains a lot of wah wah pedal! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member It appears as though ambient lighting only was used in this godawful tale of murder at a country house. The house itself is creepy looking (even creepier than the house later used in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre). Psycho's infamous shower scene is ripped off here as a "bathtub scene", with far lesser effect. Then, it's off to a bar, to listen to the band perform, and pad out the film's run time a bit further. A dippy little love story takes over the proceedings, and film fritters away at least another half an hour of the film's run time on that issue, and melodramatics between Billy and his dad. I caught inspiration for scenes later in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and Amityville Horror, but that doesn't mean that this is a good flick. With a higher budget, more nudity and gore, this might have been a better exploitation title, but as it is, just a boring, terribly slowly paced grindhouse flick. Lots of blah, blah blah, blah blah, but little action. The meathooks (more than the single meathook suggested by the film's title) do no even appear until an hour and ten minutes into the film, and are only on screen for perhaps ten seconds. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member It wasn't too hard to figure out where this gritty early 70's exploitation film was going. A farmer convinces his grown son Billy that his boy kills women during blackouts in order to hide the fact that he kills them himself to satisfy his mentally ill wife's desire for a cannibalistic diet. Grocery bills are down and mom no longer bothers to make salad as an appetizer. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member A genre of movie that America has forgotten: the drive-in theater horror flick. Girdler's films were a part of the local flavor in the southeastern US. While Hollywood was pumping out conventional plots and morally puritan movies, Girdler was pushing out spine-tinglers. Don't expect this movie to be the equivalent of Fincher/Cameron. This is in the era of low-budget project horror. It's not for the listless. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member I don't understand how this film influenced so many other horror films to be made.
