A group of Basque settlers journeys via wagon train from Missouri to California, with dreams of starting new lives and planting treasured grape vines out West. The settlers are led by disreputable tracker Lon Bennett (Jeff Chandler), who lusts after Gabrielle (Susan Hayward) and means to have her no matter what. But first he'll need to get past Gabrielle's husband, Andre (Carl Esmond). Despite accidents and Native American attacks, Bennett is determined to get what he wants.
