Audience Member Riefenstahl's later criticism that casting herself as the lead female role was a huge mistake is understatement. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Although visually beautiful and significantly better than The Blue Light, Tiefland suffers from its location in time and space. It does include some engaging mountain action scenes and a "water for the peasants-peasants before the nasty rich nobleman" message, but those assets are overshadowed by the films choppiness and slightly distracting editing, not usually a problem with Riefenstahl films. Shot during World War II, practical constraints that were absent with Triumph and Olympia show up here. James Cameron's quasi-remake "Titanic" is a much better crafted film. Riefenstahl's acting is fine, but she really should have beefed up her character, who does a little to much standing around. Give the woman a more epic story or subject to document for crying out loud. Her dream project, an adaptation of Kleist's tragedy Penthesilea would have been suitably grand. It's such a huge shame that we'll never know what films she might have made in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, and so on had she not been blacklisted. I'm not sure why Hollywood didn't snatch her up like NASA plucked SS Sturmbannfà 1/4hrer Wernher Von Braun. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Read all reviews
