      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

The Tiger and the Snow proves Roberto Benigni's antics are bizarrely ill-suited for a film seeking to strike the unwieldy balance between romance, comedy, and wartime drama.

Audience Member I absolutely loved it and am looking for it to show watch it again with my wife. Saw it about 10 years ago and remember it to be very touching, and liking it even better than La vita es bella Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member This must be the least funny and least entertaining thing I have ever seen. The main character is a goddamn creep. Moreover, I'd love to believe that someone who has lost their mind is not considered to be funny. The cherry on top: the characters poems are horrible and meaningless. Just like all the things he's talking about throughout the movie. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Ian S It is fascinating to see how clueless the professional critics can be. Their need to fit a film or an actor into a clearly defined category can cause them all to completely miss the point. These are some of the same people who called "The Martian" a musical comedy. Most of the professional reviews are based on narrow-minded presumptions about the characters, or the actors, or the genre itself. Their lack of insight and creativity shows why they are critics and not creators. This movie is not a "mad-cap comedy" or a typical romance. It is certainly not a historical drama. To me, it is a light-hearted tragedy about a man with very few obviously redeemable characteristics, whose annoying narcissistic obsession conceals his own selfless devotion to others, sometimes from others, and sometimes from himself. It weaves between being frustrating, funny, annoying, inspiring, heart-wrenching, heart warming, devastating and hopeful. If you view it like an editor or a film critic, then you miss the experience. But judging by the audience reaction, most people are able to see the beauty of this work. It is too deep a film for those whose job is to be either unimpressed or offended. But for thoughtful members of the human race, this is a brilliant and inspiring film with lessons, humour and hope for all. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/20/19 Full Review Audience Member A passionate story that shows a poetic meaning of love. Brilliant, exciting. Benigni is a master. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member If there is anything that this movie proves, it is that critics are idiots. I have watched this film several times with different people, and we loved it every time. This is a tragic-comedy that is relatable and inspiring. Poetic love amid the mundane horrors of war and military occupation. Keats and Nietzsche, flowers and tanks. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member Benigni's diamonds!!!! G. Allen Johnson San Francisco Chronicle This film, one of the worst of 2006, almost has to be seen to be believed -- a comedy about a man who goes to Iraq, and, amid a string of comic misadventures, tries to save the life of his love, who has been gravely wounded in a bombing. Rated: 0/4 Dec 29, 2006 Full Review David Germain Associated Press Like Life Is Beautiful, The Tiger and the Snow incongruously offers sharp laughs and touches of tenderness amid moments of drama and danger. Rated: B+ Dec 29, 2006 Full Review V.A. Musetto New York Post The only award Benigni's misconceived and unfunny The Tiger and the Snow could possibly win is for Worst Movie of 2006. [Full Review in Spanish] Feb 12, 2020 Full Review Ed Halter L.A. Weekly Roberto Benigni here plays out a madcap tale of romantic obsession against the backdrop of the Iraq invasion. The results are neither profound nor funny.
