Mark Kermode Observer (UK) You'll share George's sense of weariness as he searches for a simple night's sleep, but more importantly you'll believe in the cold world he inhabits, and the complex plight of those around him. Rated: 3/5 Mar 6, 2016 Full Review Tara Brady Irish Times Everyone listed in the final credits - especially writer- director Oren Moverman - should feel proud of their involvement. Rated: 4/5 Mar 6, 2016 Full Review Geoffrey Macnab Independent (UK) Oren Moverman's observational drama about the day-to-day life of George (Richard Gere), a homeless man in New York, is made with delicacy and insight. Rated: 4/5 Mar 3, 2016 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com …uses Gere’s considerable star power to shine a light on a regrettable part of everyday life that many of us choose to ignore… Rated: 4/5 May 12, 2023 Full Review Debbie Lynn Elias Behind The Lens If ever a film could be described as having 'a soul', this would be the one. Time Out Of Mind is masterful. Nov 29, 2019 Full Review Steve Erickson Nashville Scene Writer-director Oren Moverman takes care to ground his film in the vivid details of New York street life, and more care went into the sound design of Time Out of Mind than any other U.S. film I've seen this year. Cindy F Found it boring. The demise of Mr Hammond spread out for over an hour to climax in his daughter giving into his addiction. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/29/23 Full Review Audience Member The protagonist of this film has spent a number of years being unable to make sense of the world around him and being bothered by background noise. By the end of this film you'll find it hard to believe you've only been going through the same experience for two hours. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member A good and thought provoking film although a bit slow Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/10/19 Full Review Audience Member A long film but more than worth watching. Geer is brilliant. This is not a typical Hollywood plotline where there's an arc of development and the hero comes good in the end. The main protagonist does have some realizations and there is some hope at the end but really, it's a slice of life of homeless people. Their days are mundane, frustrating, tedious, lonely, harsh, tragic. That's reality and this film portrays the life of a whole sector of the population the rest of us tent to overlook. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review dave j Social commentary no plot movie with veteran actor Richard Gere who was also credited as executive producer as well who stars as George getting kicked out of an apartment building before struggling to find some place to sleep. By the time he finds a homeless shelter, he builds a rapport with another homeless man named Dixon (Ben Vereen). Viewers do not really get a backstory of what he did before he became homeless, but he does make some attempts to make amends with his independent daughter, Maggie (Jena Malone). Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Richard Gere plays against type in a film about a homeless man who has lost all sense of his identity and to an extent refuses to accept his situation for what it is. There is a plot point about a man trying to reconnect with his daughter but this almost plays second fiddle to a film that takes an unsentimental look at life on the streets of New York. It's about the day to day struggle of finding food and shelter but also the loneliness of having nowhere to go and nothing to do with your time. It is a slow film that demands patience and so won't be to everyone's taste but I did enjoy it, especially the way it was filmed. It's almost filmed from the shadows, always at a distance from it's central lead, it makes the performances look a lot more natural plus we also see the indifference to the homeless by everyone else who happened to be walking by during filming.
