Great visuals, but the story feels like a cut-and-paste job of other sci-fi movies. Read critic reviews

      Audience Reviews for Titan A.E.

By and large, not the most effective young adult animated film ever made, "Titan A.E." does achieve some general level of memorability with its ensemble voice cast and its use of science fiction and space travel, however, it fails to stand the test of time and occasionally looks haphazard and uneven. Lead by Matt Damon as the main character Cale, the general emotions are there, but not much more than that. Drew Barrymore and Bill Pullman do well in bringing their characters to life and capture an essence that makes the film more enjoyable. The plot of the film: a band of misfits searching for humanities last hope after Earth is destroyed, is a solid through-line science fiction film but with constant motivation shifts and little emotional attachment between the characters, the overall story-line is lacking. Also, desperate to adhere to a young adult age group, the film's score is comprised of pop music that often feels out of place, including LIT's "Over My Head" as its strongest anthem. Successful in its time and praised by several critics, "Titan A.E." over 13 years later is not the strong science fiction film it once was, and instead is a rather scattered attempt at bringing animated adventures to adults.

The animated adventure that performed so poorly at the box office, that Fox Animation went out of business. This is a rare gem of a film that is vastly original, and completely fun. With an all star voice cast such as Matt Damon, Tone Luc, Jeanine Graffalo, Drew Barrymore, John Leguizamo and Nathan Lane, TITAN A.E. (After Earth) is a wondrous blend of 2D and 3D animation.

I'm more interested in it on a visual level than in the actual story. For example the film's villains, the Drej, are your typical malevolent alien species bent on destroying mankind, but how the are visual depicted, as beings of pure energy that can defy the normal laws of physics is actually rather facinating.

It's exciting to see Bluth/Goldman tackle an animated Scifi feature. Known for their tendency to break the child-like constraints of their Disney competition and deliver sophistication above the average "cartoon" movie, this was something to look forward to. And It doesn't disappoint. It's beyond me why critics are so hard on Titan AE. The movie plays on many SciFi themes/templates from existing material, but there's enough original concepts in the designs and ideas to make it more than a mere derivative. It's a perfect entry into the Scifi genre for newcomers and a respectable ride for veterans. It never actually falls short of anything except for the 90's rock mashed into a few scenes that probably would have benefit more from a traditional approach. (but hey, I'm no music critic!) That and maybe because the technology was new at the time but the 3D work never really meshes that well with the 2D on several occasions. For the record, Stith is awesome and Gune is deliciously quirky. Intelligent Guard? The best.
